2001 News 

  • 2001 fall - Harriet Castrataro received an Indiana University Staff Merit Award in December 2001 from Chancellor Brehm. It is IU's highest award for outstanding professional staff and the award is based on several criteria including demonstrated special effort toward improving IU for the benefit of students, faculty, staff and alumni. 

  • 2001 fall - The war on terrorism will bring an early end to the clean living movement now underway in this country, according to the book by Ruth Engs, her fifth on addictive behaviors, entitled Clean Living Movements: American Cycles of Health Reform (Praeger Press).

  • 2001 fall - The Graduate Student Advisory Council would like to wish Dr. S. Kay Burrus a happy retirement in Spring 2002!

  • 2001 fall - Brian Dodge, Ph.D. student and associate instructor, has designed the
    Applied Health Science Department's Men's Health course, which will now be
    offered for the third consecutive semester in Spring 2002 (HPER H306). This
    unique course aims to provide a survey of the dynamics of male health issues
    within the broader theoretical framework of the emerging field of men's
    health studies. The class focuses on the critical impact of gender on
    health, social life, and individual experience.

  • 2001 fall - The Carter Littell Memorial Scholarship (value of award $3000 for each of four recipients) is awarded to either an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a career in healthcare services, particularly related to the treatment of physical and mental handicaps. Applications may be picked up in and returned to HPER 115, with the deadline of 5:00pm on November 15th. This scholarship will also be available with the School's annual scholarship application process which begins on December 1st and ends on February 1st, 2002.

  • 2001 fall - This past year AHS students volunteered over 1000 hours of their time at 30 local organizations. 

  • 2001 fall - Two successful health fairs were conducted. The first; M403/H502 students set up on Tuesday, October 16, in the SRSC. The second; H414 students set up on Wednesday, October 17, at the College Mall.

  • 2001 fall - Harriet Castrataro attended a conference in Ottawa, Ontario Oct. 11-14, joining 1700 other advisors from all over the US and Canada. Some of the highlights included presentations on advising and the web, advising communication, and interview skills.

  • 2001 fall - Harriet Castrataro has a new baby granddaughter, Megan Nicole, born June 19, 2001.

  • 2001 fall - Mary Winburn has worked for Indiana University for 10 years.

  • 2001 fall - Doctoral students, Lisako Jones, Mi Kyung Jun, and Pitiyage Belisha Perera, are currently working at the PRC.

  • 2001 fall - JoBeth McMcCarthy-Jean, who is pursuing an MPH degree, works with the Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program at the PRC and assists with the "Drug Use in American Society" class on campus.

  • 2001 fall - Tammy Wynard, who will complete her Masters in School and College Health degree this year, works on the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevalence Survey at the PRC.

  • 2001 fall - On September 7 Xinia Elena Fernandez Rojas successfully defended her dissertation and completed all the requirements for her Ph.D. Her dissertation topic is "The Effects of Processing, Hybridization and Blending of Various Oil Types on the Fatty Acid Composition of Costa Rican Crude Palm Oil and Derivatives Used For Human Consumption." Dr. Fernandez Rojas and Dr. Nathan Shier, her Dissertation Chairperson, also presented a paper on this topic at the American Oil Chemists Society in Minneapolis this past summer.

  • 2001 fall - Doctoral student Lisako Jones presented a paper at the recent meeting of the American Public Health Association. She and her faculty colleagues, Professors Torabi and Bailey, analyzed data concerning adolescents’ survey responses concerning risk taking and alcohol use.

  • 2001 fall - Our MPH students’ summer and fall internships are as follows: Jennifer Conner- Marion Co Health Department; Gwen Devins- National Cancer Institute; Dalana Johnson-Office of Women, Dept of Health and Human Services (Washington, DC); Ieshia Jones- U.S. Department of Health Resources and Administration, HIV/AIDS Bureau - Office of Policy and Program Development (Maryland); Sheila Petty-Health and Wellness Education, Indiana University; Matt Riley- Hoosier Uplands; Omar Shariff- Miami County Health Department (Ohio); Courtney Stuhley- Sarasota Health Department (Florida).

  • 2001 fall - Robert Billingham has received the Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Office of Returning Student Services in the IU School of Continuing Studies.

  • 2001 fall - Earl Blair established a student section of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) at IU. With 18 student members and 6 active student officers in place, the student section is a part of the Central Indiana Chapter of ASSE, the world's oldest and largest safety organization.

  • 2001 fall - Harriet Castrataro, academic advisor and co-director of the department's Career Placement Center, serves on two campus-wide committees - the Bloomington Advisors' Council Steering Committee and the Board of Aeons Career Planning and Placement Committee.

  • 2001 fall - Alice Lindeman offers a new health course: H350 Complementary and Alternative Approaches to Health, a course for all IU students to help them learn about health practices from around the world. IDS news had commended on this new course.

  • 2001 fall - Michael Reece joins AHS faculty and will be teaching public health education courses.  

  • 2001 fall - Millicent Fleming-Moran joins AHS faculty. Dr. Fleming received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health in 1988. Her training focus was on cardiovascular disease, and her doctoral research examined the effects of heading a household and job-related stressors on blood pressure levels of women in a biracial community sample of employed adults.

  • 2001 fall - Graham F. Watts joins AHS faculty. Dr. Watts, his wife Medra and their son Graham, Jr. have just moved to Bloomington from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Dr. Watts completed his PhD in Health Studies at the University of Alabama. He has Florida ties too, earning both a BS in Health and a master’s degree in Health Promotion from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. From 1987-1993, Dr. Watts served in the US Navy on the warship USS Boone (FFG – 28). Dr. Watts is also on the PRC staff.

  • 2001 fall - David Birch has taken a position as Chairperson for the Department of Health Education and Recreation at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. 

  • 2001 fall - Thomas Tai-Seale has left us for the Lone Star state. He is currently at Texas A & M.

  • 2001 spring - Dennis Daniels received his new position as Deputy Director of Population/Personal Health and Clinical Services with the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness in Georgia.

  • 2001 spring - Mohammad Torabi was selected as a "Scholar in Residence" at Ball State University.

  • 2001 spring - Mohammad Torabi delivered the Scholar Address at the Annual Conference of the American Association for Health Education, "Paths for Successful Health Education Scholars: Research and Teaching."

  • 2001 spring - US News & World Report ranked AHS's MPH program as 11th in the nation in community health.

  • 2001 spring - Kathy Finley took a position as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist with the University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety.
