2002 News
- 2002 fall - Sara Cole has received the HPER University Fellowship for the 3rd straight year and presented a paper entitled "Sexual Compulsivity Among College Women: Implications for Sexual Health" at APHA in November.
- 2002 fall - Haydee Encarnacion received her CHES certification in April and passed her oral and written exams in summer.
- 2002 fall - All 17 out of 17 of dietetics students who graduated in 2002 were placed in dietetics internships.
- 2002 fall - Trent Applegate is serving as visiting lecturer with responsibility for First Aid and Emergency Care course.
- 2002 fall - Kathleen Gilbert was appointed Associate Dean for Employee Relations for HPER. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Association for Death Education and Counseling, and spent time in Norway this summer at the Cultural Issues Working Group of the International Working Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement.
- 2002 fall - Billie Pearson has moved from the Prevention Resource Center to a position as visiting lecturer. Billie is teaching Men's Health and Women's Health and supervising school health students in their field experience and student teaching.
- 2002 fall - Maria Schmidt and her husband Bruce Stephenson have a new baby girl, Marta Grace, born October 2, 2002.
- 2002 fall - William Yarber hosted 30 HIV prevention specialists in a 3-day event on the Bloomington campus which focused on HIV/AIDS prevention guidelines for American native peoples. In October Dr. Yarber received the American Social Health Association Research Council Award for outstanding research in adolescent sexuality at the ASHA annual meeting.
- 2002 fall - Carole Nowicke presented a lecture on former IU School of Music faculty member William J. Bell at the Great American Brass Band Festival on June 13. Dr. Nowiscke has completed over 20 oral histories as part of the tuba-euphonium oral history project during the past two years. They are now a part of IU oral history collection.
- 2002 fall - Barbara Seitze de Martinez gave papers and workshops in Washington DC, Bloomington (MN), Denver, and Indianapolis. Topics were the use of GIS in prevention and a portal web site she is developing for Hispanic/Latinos on prevention. Also, she was reelected for a 3-year term to the National Steering Committee of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.
- 2002 fall - Mary Winburn was awarded the HPER Staff Merit Award for the year 2001. Mary has been with the Applied Health Science Department for five years.
- 2002 fall - Feedback from students has assured the effectiveness of human sexuality class offered by AHS department. The popularity of this course, which several students said came highly recommended by their peers, indicates it helps improve students' personal lives in some way.

2002 fall - HPER alumni awards were presented by the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation to three distinguished graduates of Applied Health Science for their personal and professional accomplishments.

2002 fall - Dr. Dominic Cooper says that senior managers are the key to to reduce workplace accidents. Getting senior management involved has a direct impact on safety performance of between 12 and 17 percent, and this is vital to success.

2002 fall - Dr. William Yarber has received the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality at the society's 44th annual meeting in Montreal on Nov. 9. IU has more recipients (five) of the honor than any other university, which Yarber says reflects the respect of the university as a worldwide leader in the scientific study of sexuality.

2002 fall - The Monroe County Emergency Management Department requests for volunteers to help with emergency relief for victims of last month's tornado. Volunteers are needed to staff the Command Center in Ellettsville with two shifts, 8-12 noon and 12 noon to 4pm. Training will be provided. The Command Center is open 7 days per week until the middle of November. If you can volunteer for a couple of these shifts, please call (812)935-2000 and ask for John Hooker or Diane David.

2002 fall - In order to reduce address harvesting programs and non-academic solicitation sent to IU addresses, the department has changed the way of displaying email addresses on its website to make sure that no one's email address is too easily accessed if the AHS website is being scanned for email addresses. We regret any inconvenience caused to our legitimate visitors.

2002 fall - IU Applied Health Science Department receives 2002 National Honor Award from the Eta Sigma Gamma, a national health education honorary society. David Gallahue, dean of HPER, and Mohammad Torabi, department chair, received the highest honor from the society on behalf of the department at the its annual conference in North Carolina on 10/4/02.

2002 fall - Application deadline for the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students is March 15, 2003. A scholarship grant of between $2,800 and $4,200 will be awarded to introduce a diverse group of minority students to issues relating to philanthropy, voluntarism, and nonprofit organizations.

2002 fall - The Department of AHS has started offering courses online. Dr. Michael Reece is teaching C501 by using technology instead of meetings in a traditional classroom.

2002 fall - The Department of AHS has started offering Human Sexuality minor for undergraduate students. 15 credit hours are required. For more information, please contact Harriet Castrataro.

2002 fall - Tap sheets for most AHS programs have been revised during summer. New students must use new tap sheets while returning students have an option of using old ones.

2002 fall - The School of HPER has started offering interdepartmental class Living Well (T142) which represents the first time that all three departments of the school have come together to offer a class. Dr. Alice Lindeman will teach general nutrition, while relationship education, along with the topics of death and dying, will come from Dr. Kathleen Gilbert.

2002 fall - Dr. William Yarber has been awarded the HPER Faculty Research Fellowship with Emory University and the Georgia Department of Correction for a collaborative study of STD risk factors of detained adolescents.

2002 fall - The Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction has awarded a $1,145,930 renewal contract to William J. Bailey to operate the Indiana Prevention Resource Center for the fiscal year 2002.

2002 fall - Dr. Earl Blair has been appointed to the National Educational Standards Committee for the American Society of Safety Engineers.

2002 fall - Rod Paige, U.S. secretary of education, spoke at the IU School of Education on Sept. 19. Paige, who holds two graduate degrees from IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, discussed how schools of education can ensure that no child is left behind in our public schools.

2002 fall - Approximately 30 HIV prevention specialists from around the country, including Alaska and Hawaii, have been invited to join forces as a National HIV Guidelines Task Force for a three-day event beginning on Sunday Aug. 18 on the Bloomington campus. The event focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention guidelines for America's native peoples and is sponsored by the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, under the direction of Dr. William Yarber.

2002 fall - Dr. Catherine Sherwood-Puzzello and Dr. Michael Reece are directing the evaluation of a three-year, community-based project in Washington County, Indiana, to improve health care education and access for the Amish, Mennonites and other target populations. The Rural Health Outreach Program is receiving $200,000 annually as one of 13 Rural Health Outreach Grant recipients in the United States.

2002 fall - Dr. William Yarber and doctoral student Robin Milhausen are co-authors of a recent study of sexual activity in rural adolescents, which was funded by the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and published in the American Journal of Health Education.

2002 fall - Michael Reece has been selected and showcased in the "Stories of IMPACT," the Community Health Scholars Program. This is quite an honor for Dr. Reece and our Department as he brings recognition to our public health program and the Department.

2002 summer - David Gallahue, an administrator and faculty member with more than 30 years of experience with the Indiana University School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), has been named dean of HPER.

2002 summer - Dong-Chul Seo has been awarded the J.K. Rash Scholarship which is awarded to a full-time doctoral student in HPER showing active participation in professional health organizations and demonstrating financial need.

2002 summer - Tammy Wynard has earned Donald J. Ludwig Scholarship which is awarded to master's degree students in AHS who have achieved a 3.5 GPA and who are pursuing studies in the area of school health or public health.

2002 summer - Haydee Encarnacion-Garcia has received Ruth Engs Graduate Research Award, An annual award for a female doctoral student in AHS conducting research in addictive behaviors or health history.

2002 summer - Brian Dodge has been honored by William L. Yarber Graduate Research Award, an annual graduate research award given to a student studying in the areas of AIDS, STD's, and human sexuality in AHS.

2002 spring - Lisako Jones, who is currently working at the IPRC, will join us this coming fall as a new member of the AHS faculty. The response from the students and faculty during her recent interview was overwhelmingly positive, and we are looking forward with great anticipation to her arrival. 2002 spring - Mohammad Torabi receives the William A. Howe Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American School Health Association. This award recognizes outstanding contributions and distinguished service in school health. Dr. Torabi’s acceptance speech focuses on contemporary health education preparation and curriculum.

2002 spring - Ruth Engs has been selected to receive the School of HPER 2002 Outstanding Researcher Award. This is a tremendous honor for Dr. Engs as well as for our Department. This award recognizes Dr. Engs' devotion to research and scholarly work in our field.

2002 spring - During the year 2001, fourteen of our former students took the Registered Dietitian (R.D.) exam, three from the class of 1999 and eleven from the class of 2000. Twelve of the fourteen passed, giving IU an 86% passing rate. Congratulations to Michelle Hertlein, Meg Peterson, Erin Carpenter, Erin Hudson, April Adams, and the seven other students who forgot to release their names.

2002 spring - Now undergrads at IU have the opportunity to earn a minor in Human Sexuality through the Department of Applied Health Science. The minor is truly interdisciplinary, with 3 required courses from our department and 2 electives chosen from sexuality-related courses across campus. 2002 spring - Brian Dodge has received a three-year post-doctorate fellowship at Columbia University's HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies sponsored by the NIH.

2002 spring - Haydee Encarnacion was awarded the 2001 COA Student Poster Contest Award during the 129th APHA Annual Meeting last October in Atlanta. This award was granted for the study “Assessing the Health Behaviors of Puerto Rican College Students.” Haydee has also received an NCI fellowhip for the summer 2002.

2002 spring - Liliana Rojas has successfully defended her dissertation, “Acculturation, Sexual Socialization, Health Protective Communication and HIV/AIDS Risk Behavior Among Hispanic Women Residing in a Large Midwestern City,” on April 18, 2002. Dr. Nancy Ellis was her dissertation chair.

2002 spring - Willam "Jody" Grizz, Jr. has become the first student from the New Albany campus to receive a bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety through our Department. Jody is one of a growing number of returning students who pursue a bachelor's degree while working full time and supporting a family.

2002 spring - The on-line application for admission to graduate programs is now available at www.gradapp.indiana.edu. If applicants are unable to complete the on-line admission application, a paper version exists, but please be aware that processing time for a submitted paper application will take thee to four weeks longer, on average, than the on-line version. However, currently undergraduate programs still allow paper-based application only.

2002 spring - Noy Kay is appointed as a committee member of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to develop advanced professional standards for health education teachers of students ages 11 to 18+. 2002 spring - Ron Hall passed away in late December, 2001 at the age of 64. Of the many accomplishments of his lifetime, Ron valued most the leadership which he was able to foster in his students. He was a wonderful teacher and a true friend to generations of safety experts.
