2003 News 

  • 2003 fall - Robin Milhausen has received the Outstanding Student Research Award at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality in San Antonio, Texas. Congratulations!

  • 2003 fall - Cecilia Obeng has been offered and has accepted a faculty position in our Department. Her responsibilities will be in our Human Development/Family Studies and School Health programs. Dr. Obeng has an advanced Diploma in Applied Education from the University of York, in the United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Education (Curriculum Instruction) from Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Obeng teaches at both Ivy Tech and Indiana University and her teaching interests lie in the different facets of Early Childhood Education and Multicultural Education. Dr. Obeng is also the author of a recently published book entitled: Home Was Uncomfortable - School Was Hell : A Confessionalist-Ethnographic Account of Belief Systems and Socio-Educational Crises in the Schooling of Ghanaian Rural Girls.

  • 2003 fall - Joyce Arthur has served our department for 40 years. Dean David Gallahue and Department Chair Mohammad Torabi appreciate her efforts and contributions by presenting her a plaque. Joyce has worked with every Chair in the history of the Department. She is the only staff member at Indiana University that we know of who has received two campus-wide meritorious service awards. This is a tribute to her life-time commitment, loyalty, and dedication to the Department. 

  • 2003 fall - Welcome our two visiting scholars: Dr. Ruslan Artykov (from Russia) is doing research with Dr. Yarber and Dr. Mika Omori (from Japan) is working with Dr. Jones-McKyer.

  • 2003 fall - Noy Kay has earned 2003 HPER Outstanding Teacher Award.

  • 2003 fall - The PhD program in Health Behavior is ranked #1 in the nation among non-schools of public health and fifth among all schools offering health education doctoral degrees.

  • 2003 fall - MPH program remains ranked in top 11 by US News and World Report.

  • 2003 fall - David Lohrmann has been elected to be the next President of the American School Health Association.

  • 2003 fall - The numbers of minority students in our graduate programs have increased and have been supported with assistantships, both from Department and School.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department has been involved in the development and instruction of the Living Well Course.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department has collaborated with the Center on Aging to offer interdisciplinary courses.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department has obtained support from our faculty for the Kinesiology ergonomics degree and the establishment of a dual undergraduate major in the area of school health.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department is collaborating with the School of Medicine and offering public health education courses with the Department of Public Health, IU School of Medicine.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department is coordinating the Health Behavior Master's degree on the IUPUI campus.

  • 2003 fall - Our Department is working with the Southeast campus in offering the Associate degree in Hazard Control and has expanded collaboration to the B.S. degree in Occupational Safety.

  • 2003 summer - Congratulate Ruth C. Engs on her retirement.

  • 2003 summer - Dr. Lloyd Kolbe will join our faculty in August. Dr. Kolbe is currently the Director of the Division of Adolescent and School Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He also has served as faculty member at North Colorado University and University of Texas; a member of the United States Senior Biomedical Research Service; Adjunct Professor at the Emory University; and Director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Health Education and Promotion for School-Aged Children and Youth. Dr. Kolbe is a world-renowned scholar in our field. He will be a great asset to our Department, and it is a privilege to have him on board.

  • 2003 summer - Dr. Mary Shaw-Perry was offered and has accepted a faculty position in our Department. Dr. Shaw-Perry is currently an associate professor and internship coordinator at the Department of Health Studies, Texas Woman’s University; Director of Extending Boundaries Projects; and Director of Texas Statewide Coordinated Statement of Need Project (HIV Service). Her research and education activities include needs assessment for HIV service providers as well as community-based program evaluation related to breast health care and diabetes screen/education. 

  • 2003 summer - Mi-Kyung Jun has been promoted to the Research Associate and Statistician of Indiana Prevention Resource Center. Since 2000, Jun has worked at IPRC on the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs survey. She earned an MPH degree from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea.

  • 2003 spring - Mohammad Torabi has been elected as President-Elect of the American Academy of Health Behavior, whose mission is advancing the profession through research in health behavior and education. 

  • 2003 spring - Mohammad Torabi was the recipient of the 2003 American Association for Health Professional Service to Health Education Award which was presented during the National Conference in Philadelphia. 

  • 2003 spring - Professors Earl Blair, Noy Kay, and Michael Reece were recipients of the 2002 Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. This is a tribute to their commitment to excellence in the classroom.

  • 2003 spring - The Master of Public Health (MPH) program received the maximum 7 year accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

  • 2003 spring - · The number of student majors as well as enrollments in our elective courses continues to rise with a healthy trend. This past year our department generated over 30,000 credit hours.

  • 2003 spring - David Gallahue, Dean of the School of HPER, is the co-author of the fourth edition of Developmental Physical Education for All Children.

  • 2003 spring - Jerry Wilkerson has been named executive associate dean of HPER and David Koceja has been promoted to associate dean for research.

  • 2003 spring - Alyce Fly has been named Associate Dean for Administration and Kathleen Gilbert is Associate Dean for Employee Relations of the School of HPER.

  • 2003 spring -Casandra Dauenhauer, Amrita De, Alex Keohler, Shannon Lacy, Shannon Smith, and Kellie Wills had been awarded Opal Conrad Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring -Leslie Donovan, Harmony Heflin, Sarah Lubbers, Molly Meinbresse, Nancy Owens, Olivia Price, Christine Smith, Leilani Soldner, Christina Starr, and Ka-Man Lo received Ruth Mary Griswold Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Zachary Lichlyter, Roosevelt Ward, IV, Dong- Chul Seo, Matthew Thygerson were the 2003 recipients of Pantaleoni Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Casandra Dauenhauer, Koon-wai Kong, Qiana Miller, Dong-Chul Seo, and Pitiyage Perera had received Crane Fund for Widows and Children Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Erin Koers had been honored by American Association for Health Education Outstanding Undergraduate Health Education Majors of the Year Award.

  • 2003 spring - Nancy Cahill, Kathryn Coffey, Sara Cole, Pitiyage Perera, Dong-Chul Seo, and Krisha Thiagarajah had earned 2002-2003 School of HPER University Fellowship Awards.

  • 2003 spring - Yeronimo Ciriaco received 2003-2004 School of HPER Graduate Minority Student Achievement Award.

  • 2003 spring - Robin Milhausen was the recipient of William L. Yarber Graduate Research Award.

  • 2003 spring - DeAnna Hillery had been awarded Donald J. Ludwig Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Mi Kyung Jun had been honored Ruth Engs Graduate Research Award.

  • 2003 spring - Robin Milhausen received William L. Yarber Professorship Fellow.

  • 2003 spring - Matthew Thygerson had earned Ron Hall Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Erica Ligon received 2003-2004 Educational Opportunity Fellowship.

  • 2003 spring - Dong-Chul Seo received 2002-2003 John Edwards Fellowship - Robin Milhausen J.K. Rash Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Both Yeon Bai and Krisha Thiagarajah had earned Margaret Seberger Scholarship.

  • 2003 spring - Hoosiers Advocating A Tobacco-free Society hosts a poster contest with themes: "the dangers of secondhand smoke" and "the tobacco industries targeting of the college population." Poster must be 18 x 24 inches and is due on January 15, 2003. For more information, please contact hats@indiana.edu.

  • 2003 spring - Brian Dodge has successfully defended his dissertation, "The Relationship Between Erotophobia-Erotophilia and Condom Use Errors, Problems and Practices in Samples of College Men" on October 24, 2002. Dr. William Yarber was his dissertation chair. He is now appointed as a post-doctoral research fellow at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies in the Department of Psychiatry, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University.
  • 2003 spring - Noy Kay and Lisako Jones-McKyer serve as Search and Screen Committee Members for recruiting school's new Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research.
  • 2003 spring - The Indiana University Cancer Center is accepting applications for a summer internship. The Summer Minority Research Fellowship Program provides a hands-on research opportunity for students to work with a mentor for nine weeks during the summer. The deadline for submitting applications is March 1. For additional information, contact program administrator Eardie Curry II at eacurry@iupui.edu.
