2004 fall - The department welcomes Arch Tinsley as our new EMT instructor. Arch has been an EMS instructor for the last twenty years, and he is excited to start teaching this semester for our department.

2004 fall - Lloyd Kolbe received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service, for his service as a member of the working group that developed the National Public Health Action Plan to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke.

2004 fall - Lloyd Kolbe was appointed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Faculty of Medicine, to serve as an External Evaluator for its Center for Health Education and Health Promotion.

2004 fall - The American Association for Health Education (AAHE) Outstanding Undergraduate Health Education Major of the Year Award for School Health goes to Megan Baldwin, and the award for Public Health Education goes to Sabeen Pirani. Congratulations Megan and Sabeen!

2004 fall - Steve Turner, a graduate of Appalachian State University, Cum Laude, accepted the position of Computer Coordinator in September, 2004.

2004 fall - Robin Canfield, working toward a B.S. in Computer Science Information Technology from Franklin University, having earned two associate degrees from Ivy Tech State College, accepted the position of Database Coordinator and Receptionist in August of 2004.

2004 fall - Harriet Castrataro, AHS Academic Advisor, is the treasurer of the Bloomington Advisors’ Council, an organization which represents all academic advisors on campus.

2004 fall - On June 1-5th, 2004, Charlotte Horner and Rose Hartzell attended the 17th Annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) in Miami Beach, Florida. Both Horner and Hartzell plan to do presentations on White Privilege around campus during the following year.

2004 fall - This past summer, Jeanie Alter and Shayla Holtkamp took advantage of an opportunity to gain graduate credits and expand their personal and professional horizons through a travel study program in France. From May 19th through July 5th, 2004 they attended the International Health Study Abroad Program in Europe through Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. Directed by Dr. Reginald Fennell, the program allows undergraduate as well as graduate students to live abroad and study at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France.

2004 fall - Guidelines targeting HIV/STD prevention in Native American communities are the product of the views of more than 20 HIV/STD native prevention specialists from throughout the United States who participated in an expert consultation meeting at IU. The free guidelines are being mailed to health care providers across the country. They can also be obtained from RCAP or William Yarber.

2004 summer - Yeronimo “Mo” Ciriaco, a former IU football player and a beloved master student of the Safety Management Program under the direction of Dr. Dominic Cooper, passed away in a tragic car accident on Saturday, August 21. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 4th at 12:30pm at the St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

2004 summer - Alice Lindeman has accepted the Department Assistant Chair position.

2004 summer - Maresa Murray has accepted a faculty position in our department. Dr. Murray received her B.A. from IU and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Michigan State University in the Department of Family and Child Ecology.

2004 summer - Susan Middlestadt, Associate Professor, has accepted a faculty position in our department. Dr. Middlestadt holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California at Berkley and specializes in the theory- and decision-based research to design and evaluate communication and behavioral change programs in health.

2004 summer - Dung Chul Seo will be teaching research methodology, measurement and evaluation, and statistics courses for graduate and undergraduate students at the school level as well as the Department.

2004 summer - Lucy Lozano will be a Visiting Lecturer teaching in the School Health program. She is currently a doctoral student at Texas Woman's University. Her dissertation topic addresses teachers' perceptions of school climate.

2004 summer - Shahla Ray will be a Visiting Lecturer teaching courses in the nutrition area. Dr. Ray received a B.S. degree from Ankara University and a M.S. degree from Hacettepe University, both institutions located in Turkey. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Colorado and completed post-doctoral training at the IU Medical Sciences Program.

2004 summer - Jennifer Kelley joins IPRC as a Research Associate. She received her MPH with an emphasis on community health education from IU in May, 2004.

2004 summer - Roger Morris at IPRC has been recognized and earned a service award for having completed more than 5 years service to the department.

2004 spring - At RCAP's 10th Anniversary celebration this spring, John Walda, Director of Federal Relations, and Dr. Jeffrey Alberts, Associate Vice President for Research for IU, came by to offer their congratulations. Both praised RCAP as an initiative which links research and prevention with the health and well-being of rural persons. The keynote speaker for the celebration was Dr. Bronwen Lichtenstein from the Institute of Rural Health Research at the University of Alabama.

2004 spring - On April 6, 2004, AHS Career Services and the IU Health Professions and Prelaw Information Center (HPPLIC) jointly sponsored a program for students interested in becoming Physician Assistants. The student speaker for the program was Elia Figueroa, a graduating Nutrition Science major who has been admitted to the PA program at St. Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

2004 spring - Under the faculty sponsorship of Dr. Alyce Fly, Amy Siegel, Amy Surgoth, Jinlin Zhou, and Jill DeJulio served up tofu and yoghurt freezes and veggies at the nutrition booth to hundreds of young girls who attended the Women in Sports Day. Melissa Buettner and Christina Starr should be added to the list of students who have done research with Dr. Fly.

2004 spring - Evangeline Chang, a junior Nutrition Science major from Hawaii, has been selected for the 2004-2005 Indiana University Board of Aeons. This is a group of 12 students chosen from across the entire IUB campus who will advise Chancellor Gros-Louis about campus issues in the upcoming year. The Board usually meets with the Chancellor monthly and serves as a constant source for student opinion. We are proud to have Evangeline on the Board of Aeons representing HPER. She is an accomplished violinist as well as a pre-medical student.

2004 spring - Kimere Corthell, a Junior majoring in Human Development/Family Studies, received an Honors Scholarship for her semester abroad in Perth, Australia.

2004 spring - Kristian Gibson, a Human Development/ Family Studies Junior, who is planning a medical career, was accepted into the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Scholars Program this year.

2004 spring - Erin Koers (BS in Public Health Education '03), Karen Trappe ( Minor in Public Health Education '03) and Christine Tisone (MPH '03, PhD in Anthropology '04) won the first place prize of Women in Science Research Day Poster Contest on March 3, 2004 for their nutrition research in the Dominican Republic.

2004 spring - Coco Lamantia received an Honors Scholarship for her internship this summer at the Indiana State University Student Health Center in Terre Haute.

2004 spring - Dr. Kolbe has been appointed by the National Academies' Institute of Medicine (IOM), in Washington, DC to become the Vice-Chair of the IOM Committee on Adolescent Health and Development. His appointment will be from 2004 to 2007.

2004 spring - Dr. Jones- McKyer has joined the research team of Dr. Steven J. Sherman in their NIH-funded investigation of intergenerational transmission of parenting and youth smoking behaviors.

2004 spring - Randi J. Alter (doctoral student), Mi Kyung Jun (doctoral candidate) co-authored a monograph with Dr. Jones- McKyer which presented findings about the after-school prevention program Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana.

2004 spring - Dr. Earl Blair has accepted a Chair position in the Department of Health, Safety and Environmental Health Sciences at Indiana State University. While we will miss him as a friend and colleague here, this is a great leadership role for him in one of the largest safety programs in the country.

2004 spring - Dr. Trent Applegate has assumed the role of Faculty Sponser to Nu Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma Health Education Honorary, effective August 2004. He replaces Dr. Lisako Jones-McKyer who had done a superb job in this role during the past year.

2004 spring - Our MPH Program, the only accredited program in the State of Indiana, for the 2nd consecutive year ranked # 11 nationally and our Ph.D. program continues to enjoy the ranking of #1 nationally.

2004 spring - Lloyd J. Kolbe receives the 2004 Award for Excellence in the Prevention and Control of Chronic Disease from the United States Chronic Disease Directors. Dr. Kolbe receives the award for his role in forming the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Kolbe was the founding director of DASH, a position he held for the past 15 years prior to joining the faculty last fall.

2004 spring - William Yarber receives an award from the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists for his contributions to the field of sexology at its annual conference in Chicago on May 15.

2004 spring - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center has newly hired Merrill Hatlen as the Grants Assistance Specialist. Merrill's most recent position was serving as a consultant for the Monroe County CAPE (Community Alliance for Education), assisting with the development of five Family Resource Centers. He is a past co-chair of the Monroe County Community Prevention Coalition and was well aware of the valuable services of the IPRC. He looks forward to working with communities throughout Indiana to secure funding for ATOD prevention initiatives. Merrill is originally from California, and has an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences/Anthropology from UC Santa Barbara and a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola-Marymount University.

2004 spring - The Indiana Prevention Resource Center has filled the Coordinator for External Affairs position with JoBeth A. McCarthy-Jean. JoBeth is a June 2003 graduate of the Department of Applied Health Science, earning her Master of Public Health degree. Since August of 2002, she has served as a Research Associate and Operations Coordinator for the Tobacco Retailer Inspection Program (TRIP) which is also housed here at the IPRC.

2004 spring - Mohammad Torabi received the Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Award on October 17, 2003. This award was bestowed at the Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honorary Annual Conference held in El Paso, Texas. The Honor Award is the highest award given by Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Education Honorary and is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution in the Health Sciences.

2004 spring - Nathan Shier's son Chris is getting his masters degree at the University of Bradford in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Chris recently passed the Foreign Service written exam in January. His son Tim is graduating from Purdue with a B.S. in Natural Resources.

2004 spring - The Association of American Colleges and Universities announced today the appointment of Lloyd J. Kolbe as a senior fellow. Dr. Kolbe will work in AAC&U's Program for Health and Higher Education (PHHE) assisting staff members as they mobilize higher education leadership to take action to meet the global challenge of HIV disease.

2004 spring - Lisako Jones-McKyer has assumed the role of Coordinator of Minority Recruitment and Retention. With this leadership role, we expect to be even more successful in diversifying our student population.

2004 spring - Millicent Fleming-Moran was elected as a Board member "at-large" for the Indiana Public Health Association for the next 3 years.

2004 spring - David Lohrmann has been inaugurated as the President of the American School Health Association at the conclusion of the National Conference in El Paso, TX in October, 2003. Dr. Lohrmann is the fourth faculty member in the history of the Department of Applied Health Science who has lead this prestigious health organization. Please join in expressing congratulations and best wishes as he will be leading this major health organization.

2004 spring - Student majors in our undergraduate programs are at an all-time high, with a total of 343 majors enrolled in fall classes. Likewise, student majors in our masters programs total 66, and we have 27 current doctoral students.
