2005 fall - The nature and requirements of the MPH degree program will change for all students matriculating effective Fall 2006. Students seeking admission to the MPH program for Fall 2006 should read important information about new requirements for the MPH degree.
- 2005 fall - Eta Sigma Gamma will be selling homemade HPER Holiday Ornaments for $5 each in order to raise money to promote health education activities in our area. These would be a perfect touch to any Holiday decorations and a great way to support Eta Sigma Gamma! 2005 fall - IU Media Relations posts the news on IUB homepage that Mohammed Torabi has received the Monica R. Wild and Doris E. White Scholar Award from the University of Northern Iowa in recognition of his health-related scholarship and leadership.

2005 fall - HPER has launched a new career website. All AHS students and alumni may get internship and job info from there. If you have a job offer, you can also post it on the same website.

2005 fall - The department is growing large and consists of: 21 faculty, 8 lecturers, 3 associate/assistant part time professors, 1 visiting assistant professor, 70 associate instructors and graduate assistants, 8 research associates, 5 professional staff and 8 support staff.

2005 fall - Enrollment in major and elective courses continues to rise. Almost 400 students pursuing bachelors degree, 81 masters, and 32 Ph.D. Plus additional students in New Albany working toward degrees in Hazard Control and Occupational Safety

2005 fall - Harriet Castrataro has been recognized for her 10 years of service to the university.

2005 fall - Jeanie (Randi Jean) Alter, Research and Evaluation Specialist, joins the Department at the IPRC.

2005 fall - Krisha Thiagarajah, visiting Lecturer, joins the Department. Her primary interest is in food consumption and school physical activity and nutrition.

2005 fall - Lesa Lorenzen-Huber, part-time Assistant Professor, joins the Department. She will be teaching in the area of lifespan development and gerontology.

2005 fall - Ruth Ann Gassman, Exective Director of IPRC, will provide leadership and direction for the IPRC.

2005 spring - William J. Bailey (1947-2005) -- "Bill" to those who knew him -- passed away on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005. For 14 years Bill dedicated his life to the IPRC and to the mission of prevention in the state of Indiana giving 24 hours a day to working, managing, and dreaming of new horizons for prevention. His vision and leadership made the IPRC into a model for other prevention resource centers in the nation. He is responsible for procuring the largest prevention grant ever in Indiana. Seeing the future of the internet, he established a web presence for the IPRC, making our state the first in the nation to build an authoritative portal to reliable drug prevention information. He was the greatest advocate of prevention in the state of Indiana and was responsible for much of the accomplishments made during the 1990s, with the momentum of his vision carrying us into the 21st century to the Imagine Indiana Together plan. Professor Bailey will be missed as a colleague and leader in drug education.

2005 spring - Katharine Feagans, Alex Yoon, and Chandra Yancey have been awarded the Wolf Scholarship, a new scholarship for dietetics students.

2005 spring - Scott Butler has received the Barbato Award at June meeting of the American College Health Association in San Diego. The award is a national competition and recognizes students who make outstanding contributions to the field of college health in accordance with the mission of ACHA. The award is named after Lewis Barbato, MD, who served ACHA for 50 years and is considered one of the field's most respected pioneers.

2005 spring - Yeon Bai, Angela Leone, and Krisha Thiagarajah were the recipients of the Margaret Seberger Scholarship.

2005 spring - Maya Frumkin was selected for the Chancellor's Fellowship.

2005 spring - Mary Winburn’s daughter Ashley graduated from Edgewood High School. Ashley will be at Ivy Tech this fall.

2005 spring - Dr. Carole Nowicke had an article published in the October, 2004 International Trumpet Guild Journal, “Walter F. Smith: The Star of the Band,” Smith was a cornet soloist from Schoolcraft, Michigan who played in the Marine Band and with John Phillip Sousa.

2005 spring - Dr. Carole Nowicke gave three lectures on April 13-14 for students at the University of Central Florida based on use of primary source material: personal papers, archival records, sound recordings, oral histories, photographs and other graphic images.

2005 spring - Munira Mehta, a junior majoring in Nutrition Science, will serve as HPER’s Chancellor’s Scholar for the 2005-2006 school year advising Chancellor Gros Louis on student issues. Ms. Mehta was born in Eldoret, Kenya. From the age of 5-16 she lived in Bombay, India. Then her family moved to French Lick, Indiana so that she and her sister could get an excellent education. Munira plans to attend medical school and become a pediatrician.

2005 spring - Colleen O’Rourke was selected for the Dean’s Senior Recognition Award for 2004-2005. Colleen graduated in May with highest distinction with a major in Human Development/Family Studies and minors in Psychology, Sociology and Gerontology. She also gave the Senior Sendoff presentation at the HPER Graduation Luncheon.

2005 spring - Marisa Capell, a Human Development/ Family Studies major with a Psychology minor, received a $1,750 Overseas Study Scholarship from the Honors College for her spring semester 2005 in Wollongong, Australia.

2005 spring - Jennifer Frasier, graduating in May 2005 with a Human Development/Family Studies major and a Gerontology minor, won a $1000 scholarship from the Home Economics Guild of Indianapolis.

2005 spring - Kim Kanney, graduating in May 2005 with a Human Development/Family Studies major and a Public Health Education minor, has been accepted into the Peace Corps. Kim will be working in South Africa on an initiative targeting a specific health concern such as AIDS or maternal health.

2005 spring - Sharon Nejfelt, an Occupational Safety major, has received a $200 research grant from HPER for a poster session she will be giving this June in New Orleans at the American Society of Safety Engineers’ Professional Development Conference. Her presentation is entitled, “Looking to the Future: the Aging Workplace Community from a Safety, Health and Environmental Perspective.”

2005 spring - Archana Trivedi, one of our MPH students, has received a Certificate in Recognition of Outstanding Performance in the Health Communications Internship Program July-Dec. 2004.

2005 spring - Randi Jean “Jeanie” Alter was awarded the Delbert Oberteuffer Scholarship by the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) at the recent American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) national conference held in Chicago Illinois, April 12th – 15th.

2005 spring - David Lohrmann has received an Award of Excellence from the American Cancer Society for his dedication and commitment to the professional growth of school health leaders who have a true and lasting impact on the future of school health and ultimately the health and well-being of children and youth. He was also selected in April to give the Dora A. Hicks Lecture at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The title of his presentation was "Leadership Lessons Learned."

2005 spring - Mohammad Torabi was awarded the Monica R. Wild and Doris E. White Scholar Award at the University of Northern Iowa on March 30 in recognition of individuals whose contributions have significantly advanced the causes of health, physical education, or recreation.
