Zuzana Simoniova Cmelikova Visiting International Scholar in Leadership and Ethics

The Jepson School of Leadership Studies is accepting applications for the position of Zuzana Simoniova Cmelikova Visiting International Scholar in Leadership and Ethics for 2012-13. This program, made possible by a generous gift from the Ukrop family, is designed to give visiting scholars who have lived abroad or who have extensive international experience the opportunity to develop courses, to design programs, or to conduct research on leadership ethics.

Visiting international scholars may be new Ph.D.’s or experienced scholars who hold a Ph. D. in an academic area related to the study of leadership and ethics. Scholars from newly formed democracies are encouraged to apply. Applicants should explain in a cover letter how their research, teaching, and future plans relate to the scholarship that they would pursue as a visitor at Jepson.

The Visiting International Scholar will be in residence at the University of Richmond for the academic year in order to pursue his or her own advanced research related to leadership and ethics. Successful applicants will receive a research stipend.

Candidates should submit a letter of application, a curriculum vita, three letters of reference, a one-page research plan, and a writing sample. Chair of the Department of Philosophy

University of Alabama at Birmingham


The UAB College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Philosophy (http://www.uab.edu/philosophy/). Assuming commensurate experience and accomplishments, the Chair will be appointed as a Professor with tenure. We currently have seven full-time faculty with strengths in biomedical ethics and philosophy of science. The Department offers a major and minor in philosophy, and, across departments, sponsors a minor in Philosophy and Law and a concentration in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

We expect the new Chair to lead the Department. Specifically, the Chair will recruit several new positions over the next five years, some in bioethics. The Chair will also support existing programs, enhance our research, and work with our Center for Ethics and Values in the Sciences. The new Chair should collaborate with other units within our College and University, especially the School of Medicine.

Good applicants will have a doctoral degree in Philosophy, preferably in Biomedical Ethics or a closely related area. They should possess a record of scholarship, as well as good teaching and service. We prefer candidates whose research complements our existing strengths and who can collaborate with scientists across UAB.

According to The Princeton Review, UAB is the third most-diverse campus in the nation. Most of our undergraduates pursue careers in healthcare, business, or engineering. UAB is the fourth-largest medical center in America, the largest employer in Alabama, and a recipient of large sums from NIH for medical research. UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS-PAN AMERICAN, Edinburg, TX. DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY -- ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (F11/12-032). The Department of History and Philosophy at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) is seeking an innovator in ethics research and pedagogy with interdisciplinary skills to engage the complex socio-political dimensions of health-related issues in South Texas. This position requires a willingness to develop a research plan in Biomedical ethics research and engage in cross-disciplinary research in healthcare issues of particular importance to the region of South Texas, such as health literacy, diabetes, obesity, or health issues surrounding poverty, race, gender, class, immigration, or legality. In addition to teaching duties in philosophy that will include professional or applied ethics, the candidate will collaborate with faculty from other departments in advancing research in healthcare.

A Ph.D. in Philosophy is required prior to start date in Fall, 2012. The candidate must demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and for research and publication.
