The Robert J. Kutak Center for the Teaching & Study of Applied Ethics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has an opening for a full-time assistant director of the Center. The Center has a Director and a Board of Advisors consisting of faculty from across the disciplines. The Center’s mission is

    to highlight the importance of critical thinking and moral reasoning in resolving ethical dilemmas and encourage its exploration in the context of different disciplines, professions, and methods of inquiry. The mission will be accomplished by providing support and sponsoring programs for students, faculty, and the community and serving as a clearinghouse of resources for researching and teaching about ethics and ethical decision-making.

The Center is housed at the College of Law but is a resource for faculty across the campus who want to incorporate ethics into their classroom teaching and research.

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Director is to assist the Director with day-to-day operation of the Center. Job duties include:

    1. Plan on-campus events such as outside lectures, brown-bag lunches, etc.
    2. Explore Center-sponsored opportunities for faculty development in ethics and curriculum development.
    3. Continue development of the ethics library.
    4. Write grants for programming.
    5. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams seeking external funding for research, particularly in the sciences and engineering.
    6. Conduct outreach for development.
    7. Organize Board of Advisors meetings.
    8. Maintain content on website.

Minimum qualifications: Master's degree in philosophy, ethics or related field required. Knowledge of applied ethics essential. Excellent verbal & written communication, interpersonal, organizational and computer skills necessary. Administrative and budget management experience preferred. Experience or involvement in the field of applied ethics in research, science or engineering desirable.

Anticipated salary: $40,000 to 45,000 plus benefits.

Director Position

Clemson University is Seeking Applications for the Position of Director of the Center for Academic Integrity. The Director is responsible for the sustenance and growth of a young and growing international consortium of colleges, universities and high schools and serves as its spokesperson on issues related to academic integrity.

Founded in 1992, CAI provides a forum to identify, affirm, and promote the values of academic integrity among students, faculty, teachers and administrators. CAI is a program center within the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University in Clemson, SC.

Working closely with CAI’s Advisory Council the Director will lead CAI’s growth and development through strategic planning, fundraising, oversight of programs and operations, personnel management, event planning, grant writing and administration, marketing, and member relations.

CAI operates with a small staff. The Director must have the management skills to guide the internal operation of the CAI home office and the leadership skills necessary to guide and work with the Advisory Council. Important qualifications for this position are personal integrity, familiarity with higher education, excellent writing and oral presentation skills, creativity, attention to detail, and high energy. This position requires frequent travel.

The director will work closely with CAI’s Advisory Council, which consists of administrators and faculty from several countries. The Director will communicate regularly with the Chair of the Advisory Council and the membership. The CAI’s director will report to the Director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics.

Associate Director
Center on the Legal Profession

This is a 75% time, fixed-term position of one year with the potential for renewal. The anticipated start date for this position is August 2008.

The mission of the Stanford Center on the Legal Profession will be to support research, teaching, public understanding, and social policy in two key areas. The first involves issues of professional responsibility, such as confidentiality, competence, conflicts of interest, counseling, and obligations to non- clients, access to services, and bar governance processes. How to address inequalities in legal assistance, sustain ethical values, and create more effective bar regulatory structures all deserve increased attention. A second area of Center focus will involve the lives of lawyers and the conditions of legal practice. The profession urgently needs more and better empirical research on legal workplaces. And law students need better preparation for structuring their careers and understanding the dynamics that will shape them.

Center Activities:

  • One Center priority will be to provide financial and collegial support for research by Stanford professors and students, as well as to develop collaborative projects with experts at other institutions and offer post- graduate fellowships for individuals interested in academic careers.
  • Curricular development initiatives will encourage new courses and collaborative teaching on issues related to legal ethics, professional and corporate governance, public service, the delivery of legal services, and the structure of legal practice.
  • The Center will also sponsor lectures, panels, workshops, conferences, and continuing education for practitioners on issues facing the legal profession.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will serve as the Associate Director for the Center on the Legal Profession. S/he will serve as the chief administrator for the center, collaborating with and assisting the Faculty Director in all Center activities. Functions will include:

  • Work with the faculty Director and Policy Board to develop the direction and goals for the Center. This may include identifying themes and topics for research and overseeing programs and participating in special projects.
  • Coordinate programs and other inter-disciplinary initiatives across campus.
  • Help write and/or edit Center reports, proposals, brochures, newsletters.
  • Oversee the Center website, and related publications.
  • Manage the budget for the Center, including forecasting and reporting on all activities and financial issues from year to year.
  • Act as a liaison with Law School External Relations as necessary.

Qualifications:
Degree in law or a related field, and experience with legal policy issues is preferred. Candidates should have familiarity with financial management and program development. Experience in program administration and budgeting are desirable, along with interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a collaborative academic setting.

The Position: Nominations and applications are invited for the position of tenure-track, assistant or associate professor of medicine, with 3 years renewable contract to begin July 2008. Applicants for this position must have a minimum of a PhD, MD, JD including training in bioethics. The ideal candidate will be immediately qualified to lead the Institute's research and teaching in innovative and translational health sciences, particulary: ethics in neuroscience, biodefense research, stem cell research, nanotechnology, and innovative pharmacology, capitalizing on AMBI's collaborative arrangements with, among others, SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Nanotech, GE Global Research, the GE/Albany Med Neural Imaging, the Brain Computer Interface group of Wadsworth Center, and NIH core grant programs in biodefense at Albany Med and the Ordway Institute.

This candidate will conduct and supervise programs of research, engage in public outreach, and consult with policymakers in a position that offers opportunities for funding not only from federal but also state and foundation sources is essentially unique in bioethics in that it crosses the sets of issues in innovation in biomedicine but allows the successful candidate to concentrate in one or two of those issues for teaching and research purposes. He or she will also play a role in the institute's benchside ethics consultation program.

Job Responsibilities: The candidate for this position will be expected to 1) direct a research program in the ethics of innovative research and technologies for 0.6 FTE, and 2) to teach in the AMBI online graduate programs for 0.4 FTE.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications and nominations for two Co-Directors for the newly established Center for Ethics in Public Life. The Center, created with funding from the Missouri State Legislature, was established in 2007 to provide ethics education and resources to those engaged in public service as well as to conduct research on issues of ethics in public policy and administrative settings, especially at the state and local government levels. The directorship will be shared jointly by Academic and Practice Co-Directors who will work together to manage the Center administratively and offer educational and outreach programming to the public and public officials, and to engage in research.

Co-Director Academic
The ideal candidate for Academic Co-Director will be a scholar with a demonstrated capacity to integrate research on ethics in public life, disseminate research findings, and provide service to the community. He or she will have demonstrated both experience with, and personal commitment to, the highest standards of effective leadership in public service and values-based professional ethics. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate in an appropriate discipline and be eligible for tenure at the level of associate professor or professor in Public Policy Administration, Political Science or other relevant discipline. The position will be structured as a half-time administrative and half-time academic appointment with a teaching load of two courses per academic year in the appropriate discipline.

Co-Director Practice
The ideal candidate for Practice Co-Director will have an academic degree and 10 or more years of professional experience in an appropriate field, preferably in elected, appointed, or career public service or an appropriate combination of education and experience. As the Center for Ethics in Public Life will actively engage academic units on campus in carrying out its mission, knowledge of and skills in working in an academic environment are highly desirable. This is a full-time administrative position, although a part-time or courtesy academic appointment in an appropriate department may be possible depending on qualifications and interest.

Job description

The Assistant Professor is expected to teach (introductory) courses in ethics and engineering for engineering students, predominantly at the Master’s level, and to perform research in the field of ethical issues relating to engineering and technology. Half of the time will be devoted to teaching and half to research.

Requirements

A PhD in ethics or another relevant discipline is required, along with a proven interest in technology/engineering and/or natural sciences, including their ethical and societal aspects. Teaching experience is also required, preferably to engineering students. An acquaintance with philosophy and logic is desirable. Applicants will not be required to teach in Dutch.

Conditions of employment

This position has a temporary employment basis of four years (48 months), 38 hours per week. The salary has a maximum of 4868 euros per month gross with a full-time appointment. The Division of Liberal Arts & International Studies at Colorado School of Mines anticipates an opening for an Assistant or Associate Professor position in Science, Technology, Society, and Policy beginning fall 2008. LAIS currently offers a Masters in International Political Economy of Resources, a graduate certificate in science and technology policy, and is working on new undergraduate initiatives.
 
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach courses in an area of expertise as well as general introductory courses in the history of science and technology, and science and technology policy. Teaching responsibilities (in a 2-2 load for research-active faculty) will include contributing to a team-taught, core course, Nature and Human Values; mid-level introductory courses in the history of science and technology; and upper or graduate-level courses in science and technology policy. An active agenda of scholarship and research is also expected.
 
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in science, technology, and society studies, policy studies, the history of technology, the history of science, or some closely related field and have demonstrated teaching and research expertise in science, technology, society, and policy. (Superior applicants completing their Ph.D. by summer 2008 will also be considered.) Applicants at the rank of Assistant Professor must have the potential to become excellent teachers and scholars. At the rank of Associate Professor, applicants must have a documented record of quality teaching and excellent scholarly research. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and communications abilities.
 
The successful candidate will have a promising teaching and research agenda in the study of technology, engineering, or science, with emphasis on policy aspects of one or more of these fields. Of special interest would be policy work related to one or more of the CSM focus areas of Earth, Energy, Materials, and Environment. We particularly welcome candidates whose research would benefit from interactions with an interdisciplinary group of colleagues.

Distinguished Bioethics Faculty Position

Wake Forest University seeks a distinguished scholar in bioethics to fill a newly-created position at the rank of full professor (with tenure), beginning Fall 2008. The successful candidate will play a leading role in developing an interdisciplinary, campus-wide Bioethics Center of national prominence, and may be considered for directorship of the Center or one of its component programs if interested and qualified. Exceptionally qualified candidates may also be considered for a chair appointment.

Candidates may come from any of the liberal arts, humanities, or sciences. The primary appointment will be in a department relevant to the candidate’s discipline within the College of Arts & Sciences. The area of specialization within bioethics is open, though expertise in biotechnology or bioscience issues is especially welcome. Princeton's University Center for Human Values is searching for a faculty member (or members), rank open, to be hired jointly with a humanities department, including Comparative Literature, History, and Religion.

Candidates must do research that significantly informs our understanding of human values, normative beliefs and practices, and/or moral reasoning.  We are particularly interested in a candidate whose work explores historical events or processes or involves close attention to the interpretation of texts. Faculty at the Center are expected to discuss their work in progress in seminars with scholars in philosophy, political theory, bioethics, legal studies, and intellectual history, and are invited to participate in other activities, including colloquia and public lectures.  The University Center for Human Values supports teaching, research, and discussion of ethics and human values throughout the curriculum and across the disciplines at Princeton University.

Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor of Health Care Ethics

The Center for Health Care Ethics (CHCE) at Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit institution dedicated to student learning, research, health care, and service, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. CHCE’s current faculty possess doctoral level degrees in a range of fields, including philosophy, psychology, law, medical humanities, and medicine. A new faculty member is sought with a doctoral degree in theology or religious studies.

CHCE faculty teach and mentor students in the Center’s Ph.D. program in Health Care Ethics and the graduate Certificate in Clinical Health Care Ethics program as well as students in the health professions throughout the University. The new faculty member will be expected to: Teach on general religious methods in health care ethics and the Catholic tradition of health care ethics; to mentor those doctoral dissertations that use theological methods; to actively publish in health care ethics; and to serve the department and university through consultations and committee work as needed.

Department of Bioethics Fellowships

National Institutes of Health

Two year postdoctoral fellowship begins September 2008. Fellows will conduct mentored theoretical and empirical research in the ethics of health policy, international research ethics, and human subject research. For a typical fellow, this research yields multiple publications in premier academic journals. Fellows will also participate in ethics consultations, review of research protocols, bioethics seminars, and many other educational opportunities available at the NIH. No teaching required, but teaching in a Department of Philosophy can be arranged. AOS or AOC: ethics or political philosophy. No bioethics experience expected or required.

Stipend based on prior experience and current US Government schedule, approximately $45,200 without prior postdoctoral experience. EO/AAE.
