Assistant/Associate Professor
Medical Anthropology or Sociology and Bioethics

Institute for the Medical Humanities (IMH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB)

The Institute for the Medical Humanities (IMH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, with rank negotiable based on experience. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary faculty in ethics, history, law, policy literature, religious studies, and visual studies who engage in research and teaching of medical students, trainees, and graduate students in the biomedical sciences. The IMH also offers an ethics consultation service in the university’s hospitals. The IMH is home of the nation’s only Ph.D. program in medical humanities.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in medical anthropology, medical sociology, or a related social science field that emphasizes qualitative and participant-observer research methods. The candidate should be interested in teaching and research within a setting of interdisciplinary scholarship in medical humanities and health policy.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary faculty in ethics, philosophy, history, law, policy, literature, religious studies, and visual studies who engage in research and teaching of medical students, trainees, and graduate students in the biomedical sciences. Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: religious studies; health care ethics; philosophy of medicine and health care; research ethics; history of medicine and public health; literature and medicine. Research and Policy Associate

Duke University

The Research and Policy Associate is responsible for three interrelated areas of work: advancing the Institute’s research agenda; translating research into publicly accessible materials, institutional practices, and public policy; and developing an extramural grant profile across the Institute’s core areas of Moral Education and Individual Decision-Making, Organizational and Business Ethics, and Civic and Global Ethics. This position reports to the Director and Associate Director of the Institute. The Research and Policy Associate will work in collaboration with faculty, research analysts, and graduate students.

Applicants should have an independent track record of research publications and grants in subjects related to the Institute’s three core areas. They must have demonstrated ability to create, organize, and implement major research projects and to facilitate the research agendas of individual faculty members. They must be able to identify opportunities for collaborative projects, attract faculty interest, and secure external sources of support. Applicants must possess both an understanding of how universities function and entrepreneurial skills in generating and sustaining new initiatives. They must have demonstrated ability to make intellectual and programmatic connections across disciplines. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated ability to forge partnerships between universities and policy-makers, think tanks, non-profits, and businesses. Applicants must have excellent communication skills; proven writing, editing and publication experience; and experience in translating ideas into public forums. Advanced degree – either a Ph.D. or a professional degree (J.D., MD, MBA, MPP) required.

The Research and Policy Associate is responsible for:

  • Research and the development of research products (grants and publications), both individually and in collaboration with Institute faculty and partners.
  • Preparing institutional reports, grant applications, and publicly accessible communications based on faculty research in the form of working papers, op-eds, etc.
  • Working with Foundation relations in the service of specific research projects.
  • Forging partnerships between the Institute and policy-makers, think tanks, non-profits, and businesses that align with research trajectories at the Institute
  • Teaching an undergraduate course depending on area of expertise and needs of the Institute.

Education and Outreach Associate

The Education and Outreach Associate is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a wide range of educational and outreach programs and activities across the Institute’s core intellectual areas: Organizational Ethics, Moral Education and Development, and Civic & Global Ethics. The Education and Outreach Associate will work in collaboration with faculty, graduate students and undergraduates.

Applicants should have both 5 years or more teaching/mentoring experience with undergraduates and 5 years or more experience in academic program development, management and evaluation. Candidates must have experience in a highly collaborative environment. Candidates must have the demonstrated creativity and ability to turn ideas into programs in the context of education and outreach including basic knowledge of staffing and budgeting. Candidates must have a demonstrated track record with extramural grants. Candidates must have knowledge and experience with university/community relations. Candidate must have superlative communication skills. Ph.D. Required.

The Education and Outreach Associate is responsible for:

The development of a coherent, actionable vision for education at the Institute.

At the undergraduate level this includes:

  • Creating an intellectual home for undergraduates
  • Offering a broad array of curricular and co-curricular opportunities for undergraduates (film series, alternative spring break, pre-matriculation, summer engagement opportunities)
  • Developing and managing new programs including a FOCUS cluster, internship program, etc.
  • Serve as Director of the Ethics Certificate Program
  • Teaching when and where needed
  • Developing ad hoc ethics workshops and trainings
  • Supervising an Undergraduate Programs Coordinator.

At the graduate level this includes:

  • Creating an intellectual home for graduate students
  • Developing dissertation working groups
  • Developing a new professional MA program

The development of a coherent, actionable vision for outreach at the Institute including, in partnership with a new Research and Policy Associate, leading a strategic review process in this area.

One-year Teaching Position

The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a one-year teaching position (open in rank; not tenure-track) in the field of business ethics in its Department of Legal Studies and Business Ethics. It is envisioned that the successful applicant will be an active participant in the intellectual life of the Department.

This position may be renewable for one or two additional years. The Department has twenty full-time faculty who offer over twenty different courses in Wharton¹s undergraduate, MBA and doctoral programs and whose research is regularly published in leading journals.
