Association for Practical and Professional Ethics
Executive Director
The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics invites applications and nominations of persons to serve as its Executive Director. Candidates must be research scholars in ethics and skilled administrators. Duties will include promoting high quality scholarship and teaching in practical and professional ethics; recruitment and retention of a dues-paying membership; fund raising, including grant writing, conducting an annual campaign, and developing a capital campaign; planning and running an annual meeting and other events as appropriate; developing programs and relationships across professions, practices, disciplines, ethics centers, and professional organizations; managing the Association’s newsletter, website, electronic communications, and publications; representing the Association to various constituencies; hiring and evaluating office staff; managing financial accounts; and occasional teaching. The Association has a membership of more than 700 scholars and professionals; the Executive Director oversees a staff of 1 full time and 2 part-time employees. The Executive Director shall have ¼ time to carry out his/her own research in practical and professional ethics in collaboration with the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at Indiana University.
The Association’s offices will be located at the Poynter Center, and the Executive Director will report to the Association’s Executive Board and the Poynter Center Director.
Qualifications include a terminal professional degree; demonstrated expertise in writing and teaching about practical and professional ethics; and strong administrative and financial management skills. Successful candidates must have broad intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for convening scholars and practitioners across many fields of practical and professional ethics. This is a non-tenure-track position of Senior Scholar at Indiana University.
Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Assistant Professor of Ethics
Hiram College
Hiram College, Hiram, OH. Tenure-track Assistant Professor, beginning fall semester 2010. We seek candidates who are trained broadly in theoretical or philosophical ethics and who are committed to teaching of ethics across the liberal arts curriculum. Candidates should have specialization in Ethics, Moral Theory, or Social and Political Philosophy. In addition, we have special interests in candidates who can augment our current offerings in applied ethics, have an interest in bringing ethical reflection to bear on issues of social justice, or service learning and civic engagement, and enhance our ethics across the curriculum initiatives through new course offerings and interdisciplinary team-teaching.
Candidate will be expected to teach six courses per year, in Hiram's unique 12-3 semester plan, including regular teaching in our freshmen program; and advise students, and to serve on College committees. Such service will involve work with the Center for the Study of Ethics and Values, the interdisciplinary home for Hiram College's initiatives for integrating ethics into the curriculum and fostering ethical reflection and education. Successful candidates will have demonstrated success in undergraduate teaching, scholarly promise, and interest in the goals of the Center. Ph.D required at time of appointment for the rank of assistant professor.

The Department of Bioethics at Cleveland Clinic invites applications for a Professional Staff position. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Staff, depending on his/her qualifications, and will be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case.
We are seeking an individual with demonstrated ability to produce significant research or scholarship in bioethics. This individual should be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and contribute to the intellectual life of a vibrant and diverse bioethics program. The successful candidate will dedicate 50-75% of his/her effort to independent research and scholarly activities in bioethics. In addition, this individual will participate in ethics education for bioethics fellows, medical students and residents, nurses, and other medical staff. Some service on hospital or college committees is expected, with opportunities to participate in clinical ethics consultation available to applicants who have an interest in that area of bioethics.
Building on a 25-year history of excellence in clinical ethics consultation, the Cleveland Clinic is committed to expanding its support of bioethics research and scholarship. A hallmark of the research and scholarship conducted by the Department of Bioethics is a focus on enhancing patient care. This patient-centered approach to bioethics research is evident in all aspects of the department's research, but most especially in the selection of study topics. Areas of current interest include: physician-patient communication, ethical issues in clinical research, introduction of novel therapies, genetic and genomic medicine, innovation in cardiology, reproductive technologies, transplantation ethics, ethics education, neuroethics, and best practices for clinical ethics consultation.
Cleveland Clinic is recognized internationally as one of the leading medical institutions in clinical research, education, and patient care. Over the past several years, its Department of Bioethics has grown to include 10 Professional Staff members (faculty) and many affiliated clinicians. The Department is the administrative home of the Cleveland Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics, a city-wide program to train the next generation of leaders in clinical ethics and bioethics research. Members of the Department have numerous collaborations with medical institutes at Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, and other regional institutions.
Candidates for this position must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in an area of study related to bioethics, such as medicine, philosophy, law, sociology, health services research, or medical anthropology. Preference will be given to individuals with significant prior research achievements (e.g., peer-reviewed publications or extramural research funding) or strong potential for building a nationally recognized research program in bioethics. Research and Policy Associate

The Research and Policy Associate is responsible for three interrelated areas of work: advancing the Institute’s research agenda; translating research into publicly accessible materials, institutional practices, and public policy; and developing an extramural grant profile across the Institute’s core areas of Moral Education and Individual Decision-Making, Organizational and Business Ethics, and Civic and Global Ethics. This position reports to the Director and Associate Director of the Institute. The Research and Policy Associate will work in collaboration with faculty, research analysts, and graduate students.
Applicants should have an independent track record of research publications and grants in subjects related to the Institute’s three core areas. They must have demonstrated ability to create, organize, and implement major research projects and to facilitate the research agendas of individual faculty members. They must be able to identify opportunities for collaborative projects, attract faculty interest, and secure external sources of support. Applicants must possess both an understanding of how universities function and entrepreneurial skills in generating and sustaining new initiatives. They must have demonstrated ability to make intellectual and programmatic connections across disciplines. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated ability to forge partnerships between universities and policy-makers, think tanks, non-profits, and businesses. Applicants must have excellent communication skills; proven writing, editing and publication experience; and experience in translating ideas into public forums. Advanced degree – either a Ph.D. or a professional degree (J.D., MD, MBA, MPP) required.
The Research and Policy Associate is responsible for:
- Research and the development of research products (grants and publications), both individually and in collaboration with Institute faculty and partners.
- Preparing institutional reports, grant applications, and publicly accessible communications based on faculty research in the form of working papers, op-eds, etc.
- Working with Foundation relations in the service of specific research projects.
- Forging partnerships between the Institute and policy-makers, think tanks, non-profits, and businesses that align with research trajectories at the Institute
- Teaching an undergraduate course depending on area of expertise and needs of the Institute.

The Education and Outreach Associate is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a wide range of educational and outreach programs and activities across the Institute’s core intellectual areas: Organizational Ethics, Moral Education and Development, and Civic & Global Ethics. The Education and Outreach Associate will work in collaboration with faculty, graduate students and undergraduates.
Applicants should have both 5 years or more teaching/mentoring experience with undergraduates and 5 years or more experience in academic program development, management and evaluation. Candidates must have experience in a highly collaborative environment. Candidates must have the demonstrated creativity and ability to turn ideas into programs in the context of education and outreach including basic knowledge of staffing and budgeting. The Education and Outreach Associate is responsible for:

At the undergraduate level this includes:
- Creating an intellectual home for undergraduates
- Offering a broad array of curricular and co-curricular opportunities for undergraduates (film series, alternative spring break, pre-matriculation, summer engagement opportunities)
- Developing and managing new programs including a FOCUS cluster, internship program, etc.
- Serve as Director of the Ethics Certificate Program
- Teaching when and where needed
- Developing ad hoc ethics workshops and trainings
- Supervising an Undergraduate Programs Coordinator.
At the graduate level this includes:
- Creating an intellectual home for graduate students
- Developing dissertation working groups
- Developing a new professional MA program
The development of a coherent, actionable vision for outreach at the Institute including, in partnership with a new Research and Policy Associate, leading a strategic review process in this area.

One-year Teaching Position
The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a one-year teaching position (open in rank; not tenure-track) in the field of business ethics in its Department of Legal Studies and Business Ethics. This position may be renewable for one or two additional years.
