TEAM PROJECTS OVERVIEW 1) Developing an exhibit on "archaeology of place" for Albion. This will concern viewing the mid-Michigan area as a native homeland and establishing continuities in the archaeology of the region. Sources of information for this exhibit may include written history, oral history (working with members of the Huron Potawatomi in Athens, Michigan), and archaeology. This display would be situated in the Whitehouse Nature Center. 2) Developing an exhibit on the Tuskegee airmen of Albion. The Tuskegee airmen were the first African Americans to pilot airplanes in the U.S. Air Force (during World War II). Three of them came from Albion. The Gardner House Museum has a display of Albion's participation in World War II, but it does not provide any information on the Tuskegee airmen of Albion. You would develop a small exhibit that could be put on display at the Gardner House Museum. Sources of information for this exhibit may include written history (from the Local History Room at the Public Library, or from old copies of the Albion Evening Recorder) and oral history (interviewing the airmen or their families living here in Albion about their experiences). 3) Researching the relationship between Albion College and the Huron Potawatomi community in Athens, Michigan. Albion College was originally founded as a school for women and Native Americans. Individuals living on the Potawatomi reservation in Athens, Michigan (20 miles south of Battle Creek) still remember the names of members of the tribe who attended Albion College during the mid-nineteenth century. Sources of information might include the Albion College archives, Baptismal records at the Potawatomi reservation, and interviews with people living on the reservation, perhaps descendents of early Albion Potawatomi students. This research should result in an article written for the Pleiad or Io Triumphe or for an exhibit for the Stockwell Library. Papers should be 8-12 pages long. They must be typed. Please proofread your papers before handing them in. If you can't spell and punctuate very well, have someone else proofread your paper. Your papers should follow the APA citation style (see the "Albion College Style Sheet"). You should use citations whenever you quote your sources directly, cite other authors' opinions or interpretations, or when you report factual information which has been obtained by others. A "References Cited" page should be appended to your paper, giving bibliographic information on all works referred to in the text of your paper. Order of Operations for Team #1 |
