GIS In Archaeology

Georeferencing and Digitizing

Data Description Information
This homework assignment will build off the previous homework assignment where we mapped the distribution of sites in the Basin of Mexico. Open your previous homework assignment map or recreate that map document here.

1. Add the scanned image GIS_In_Archaeology\Data\Scans\Ag_Use.tif to the map document.

2. Use the techniques in the Georeferencing lab to place this image in it’s proper geographic placement. Be sure to use a minimum of four points in this process.

3. Save the link table you created in step 2 with the name Ag_Use_Links.txt.

4. Use the georeferencing Rectify tool to produce a rectified version of the scanned image.

5. Create a new polygon shapefile or feature class. Set this layer to be in the proper geographic coordinate system and save it with the name Ag_Use.

6. Add the appropriate fields to the attribute table so that you will be able to adequately identify each polygon as you digitize it.

6. Use the digitizing techniques we learned in the previous lab exercises to create a GIS coverage that maps the agricultural land types throughout the entire study universe. Be sure to make frequent saves and, if necessary, backups to ensure that a simple error doesn’t wipe out a lot of work.

7. Once completed create an appropriate symbology for the layer.

8. Create and save a jpg image of the map you just created.

9. E-mail the Ag_Use_Links.txt, the Ag_Use polygon coverage, and the map image to me.
