ArcGIS takes a modular approach to software design. Different ArcGIS components perform different operations. ArcGIS comes in 3 basic “flavors:” ArcView ArcEditor ArcInfo

ArcView

ArcView contains basic tools for data input, display, exploration, analysis and modeling:

ArcMap -- Edit, display, explore and analyze data

ArcCatalog -- Manage data sources and metadata

ArcToolbox -- Tools for analysis and data conversion

Extensions

ArcEditor

All the basics of ArcView -- provides greater contol over geodatabases.

ArcInfo
