B. Course Purpose: The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to archaeological methods and theory.
C. Course Description: The course is an introduction to archaeology. Emphasis is on nature of archaeological inquiry, the major events in the history of archaeology, the different approaches to the study of archaeology, the purpose and process of archaeological research and data acquisition, the methods used to date archaeological finds, the ways in which archaeologists reconstruct human behavior, and the relevancy of archaeology in today’s society. Archaeological examples are drawn from a variety of sources from all over the world.
D. Course objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Define the nature of archaeology as a social science
- Identify and explain the seven principles for teaching archaeology
- List and describe the major events in the history of archaeology
- Describe the purpose and process of archaeological research and data acquisition
- Describe the methods used to archaeological finds
- Identify and analyze the ways archaeologists reconstruct human behavior
- Explain the relevancy of archaeology in today’s society
