EXAM #3 ANSWER ALL THE FOLLOWING in essays (with proper anthropological citations and bibliography if necessary) . Use information from readings, lectures, discussions, and audiovisual presentations. It is not required that additional readings be consulted to answer exam questions, but you may wish to do so to enhance the quality of your answers. Exam papers must be in proper anthropological format, typed, double-spaced, between 10-12 pages. Please read the questions carefully and answer all parts. Due by NOON, Monday 28 April 1. Compare the Late Intermediate, the Late Horizon, and the postcontact period of South America in terms of political economy, public works, and material culture, and using BOTH archaeology and history. Discuss the balance of power between coastal and highland cultures during these 3 time periods. 2. Describe Inca statecraft AND the ARCHAEOLOGICAL evidence for it. What elements made quick conquest and expansion into empire possible? What elements were original, as far as we can tell, and which ones were derived from past cultures, as far as the material record can show? Where was it not possible for the Inca to conquer or expand, and why? Why is it of any use to study this ancient and unusual but extinct civilization today? 3. Do a map of South America showing locations of Chimu and other regional states, Inca empire, and important sites from the 3 time periods discussed in question 1. Don't forget other areas of the continent besides Peru. Include important geographic features such as valleys, mountains. Fanciness does not count as much as neatness and legibility, but do a respectable job worthy of senior anthropology student production. Put on modern political boundaries. |
