Instructional Goals

This course is designed to provide you with theoretical and practical foundations of teaching art in the elementary classroom, and to assist you in becoming more comfortable and confident in your ability to design and implement arts activities for your students. We will cover a range of topics including, but not limited to, the following:
  • the artistic development of children
  • dealing with special populations
  • the creation of lesson plans that integrate visual art with other subject areas
  • how to set up your classroom in ways that best support the activities you plan to teach
  • accessing and organizing art materials
  • pluralism in art education
  • folklore and material culture as sources for arts programming
  • visual art resources available through libraries and the web
  • looking at and talking about art with children of all ages.
Ways You Will Learn

To work towards accomplishing these goals this course is designed, in part, to reacquaint you with the pleasure and excitement of creating in a variety of media. Through your participation in a number of "hands on" workshops you will acquire new skills that will assist you in your efforts to incorporate art activities into your classroom practice in individual and meaningful ways.

Another aspect of the M333 class will be to prepare you to look at and talk about art with your elementary students. This activity is important not only for learning about art, but is a skill that can be integrated with other subjects such as social studies, science, language arts, and math. In fact, in your field experience, you will be required to teach an art lesson as part of a social studies unit.
