Application Information | Graduate Studies

The Graduate Program in the History of Art enrolls approximately 15 new graduate students each year, selected from the applicant pool based on their academic merit and fit with the current strengths of the graduate program.

• Applicants should, ideally, have completed an undergraduate major in art history, or at the least, substantial undergraduate coursework.  Applicants to the Master’s Degree with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5 and a GRE Verbal score of at least 160 will be given preference.  However, the graduate admissions committee evaluates all components of an application package before arriving at a decision on admission. 
• Recommendation letters should come from university faculty (preferably art historians) or museum or gallery professionals who have directly observed the work of the applicant.
• A Ph.D applicant’s statement of purpose should address specifically the proposed field of study and the faculty member with whom the applicant wishes to work.

GRE Scores

The Graduate School suggests a minimum verbal score of 160. The GRE scores will be evaluated by the Department of the History of Art in conjunction with the rest of the application materials.

TOEFL Requirements:

Minimum Paper based TOEFL (PBT) Scores: Overall score: 600
Minimum Internet-based TOEFL Scores:: Overall score: 100

TOEFL and IELTS scores
If your native language is not English, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS) to demonstrate your proficiency in English. A minimum TOEFL score of 100 (600 on the paper-based TOEFL) or a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 is required. The requirement is waived for those who have earned a degree in the United States. Students who have earned their degree outside of the United States are required to submit valid TOEFL or IELTS scores, even if English was the language of instruction in their college or university.

• Transcripts (two copies, either sent electronically from originating university, or mailed)
• GRE/TOEFL scores
• Writing sample
• Three letters of recommendation

Note:
Curriculum Vitae is optional.
The Statement of Purpose and the recommendations letters may be submitted on-line with the application.
