Dr. Joanna Woronkowicz, Assistant Professor, published in Cultural Trends Journal
April 18, 2014
Please join us in congratulating SPEA Assistant Professor, Dr. Joanna Woronkowicz on the publication of her article in Cultural Trends entitled “The determinants of cultural building: Identifying the demographic and economic factors associated with cultural facility investment in U.S. metropolitan statistical areas between 1994 and 2008.” Using a two-part model, Dr. Woronkowicz estimates the effects of economic and demographic variables on an MSA’s per capita investment in cultural facilities. The results suggest that investment in cultural facilities is positively associated with an MSA's existing stock of cultural facilities, its population change, education and median household income levels. Dr. Woronkowicz also finds evidence that building project leaders may have not adequately assessed sector demand before the country’s most recent cultural building boom, which took place between 1998 and 2002. She encourages project leaders to conduct better demand assessments to prevent projects from experiencing financial difficulties post-completion.
