Arts Administration Program Welcomes New Professor, Frank Lewis

Frank C. Lewis comes to SPEA from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he was the Director of Exhibitions and Curator of the Collections for the Wriston Art Galleries and an instructor in art history.
Frank holds an M.A. in art history from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. in English and Studio Art from Emory and Henry College in Virginia. He has taught art history, theory and criticism, and museum studies and practice, for almost thirty years at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The University of Chicago, The University of Wisconsin, Madison, Milwaukee, and Parkside, and Lawrence University.
In addition to teaching, Frank was an art critic writing for the Milwaukee Sentinel, The New Art Examiner, Dialogue, and After Image, among others. He was also a founding editor of Art Muscle magazine and for ten years he was the editor of Metalsmith magazine. Frank has also held the position of lecturer in the Department of Museum Education at the Art Institute of Chicago, curator at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, Wisconsin), curator and assistant director of the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), and Director of the University Art Museum at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Frank is married to Michal Ann Carley, an artist and blacksmith and while it has been many years since he has been in the painting studio or the darkroom, he is an active, amateur luthier and woodworker.
