Spanish and Portuguese Wins Federal Grant
More than $500K awarded by U.S. Department of Education for graduate fellowships

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences has been awarded a major, multi-year federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) for a total of $533,000. The grant is intended to enhance the department’s graduate program and will be used to fund a limited number of highly competitive GAANN fellowships. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is home to 21 tenure-stream faculty who research and teach a wide array of specialty areas in Hispanic, Lusophone and Catalan literatures and cultures, and Hispanic linguistics.
