Undergrad Russian Major Wins LIFT Scholarship

Alyssa Lindley, a junior IUB student majoring in Russian, was selected as a recipient of a Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Language Intensive Focus Track (LIFT) scholarship for the spring 2013 semester. Lindley studied at the CIEE Study Center in St. Petersburg, Russia. The $5,000 award enables serious, dedicated students to pursue foreign language study abroad for a full year.
“I can say without hesitation that this has been the most rewarding and meaningful experience of my life,” says Lindley. “The most obvious benefit has been the amelioration of my Russian language skills, which have increased exponentially with the help of my teachers, Russian friends, and everyday immersion in the culture.”
“We’re truly impressed that Alyssa is as serious as we are about intensive language study,” says David Fougire, Chief Operating Officer of Study Abroad at CIEE. “Only the top students who are committed to deep language acquisition receive LIFT scholarships--we recognize and applaud Alyssa’s dedication to advancing her education.”
Lindley arrived in St. Petersburg in September 2012, and says that as a result of this award she’s been able to explore St. Petersburg and other Russian cities on a much deeper level. “I feel that it has given me a much better grasp on the Russian culture and language,” says Lindley.
The Slavic department encourages all students to spend at least a semester studying in a foreign country to improve their language skills and cultural understanding. More information on study abroad programs through Indiana University can be found at overseas.iu.edu.
