Risner Welcomed to Faculty

Jonathan Risner is a new Assistant Professor in the
Department of Spanish and Portuguese whose research and teaching focuses on Latin American Film, Literature, Cultural Studies, and Latina/o Film. He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2012, and was a Visiting Assistant Professor at McDaniel College for 2012-13. His dissertation, "Blood Runs: The Circulation of Argentine Horror Cinema in Argentina and the United States," focuses on Argentine horror films and horror film culture and will serve as a point of departure for his first book project on contemporary Argentine horror cinema. His analysis centers on specific horror films for their projection of historical and contemporary sociopolitical allegories, including the 2001 economic collapse. In addition to several publications on Argentine horror cinema, Jonathan has written about Latina/o authenticity in graphic novels and comics.
During his graduate research, he was the recipient of several awards including a Mellon Dissertation Fellowship.
