Dave Rowe, visiting assistant professor in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, has received a 2011 Efroymson Contemporary Artist Fellowship. The award period runs from Dec. 1, 2011 to Nov. 30, 2012, and includes a $20,000 award to assist in the creation of new works.

Rowe earned his MFA in Studio Art in 2009, and joined the faculty of the Hope School of Fine Arts in 2010. He teaches the 3-D Fundamentals class.

In its news release about this year’s awards, the Efroymson Family Fund said: “David works with primarily with the Midwestern American landscape and his pieces viewed at a distance represent the landscape they reference. David uses construction lumber, glue and nails to build large-scale sculptures built organically one piece at a time.”

The Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship has very few restrictions. Eligible artists must live in select counties in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky; be age 25 or older; and work in photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, new media or installation art. Efroymson Fellows are allowed to use their grant money any way they choose to further their artistic careers. “The idea behind the Fellowship is simply to encourage emerging and established contemporary artists to continue their artistic professional development,” the fund says.

“My plan for the award includes building a new website, and expanding my current skill set to include new digital technology in my art,” Rowe said. “I am very excited at what this will mean for my studio practice, and I hope that the experiences gained through this opportunity can have an impact on my teaching as well.”
