The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has featured on its website a paper written by graduate student Erkin Kuru (Biochemistry), Yves Brun (Clyde Culbertson Professor of Biology), Mike VanNieuwenhze (Associate Professor of Chemistry), and their co-authors (at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD).

The paper, \"A new metabolic cell wall labeling method reveals peptidoglycan in Chlamydia trachomatis,\" was released by Nature on Dec. 11, 2013.  These unusual bacteria were heretofore thought not to produce peptidoglycan, so this is a major new finding and suggests new ways to target these pathogens.  This fantastic work takes advantage of new cell wall labeling reagents for fluorescence microscopy that were developed as a collaboration between the Brun and VanNieuwenhze labs.
