Goals of the Project
- Participants will strengthen and expand the network of Area 10 mathematics
teachers who are working together to improve mathematics instruction and
increase student learning.
- Participants will increase their repertoire of lessons and units for
teaching worthwhile mathematical topics through applications.
- Participants will improve their skills for using technology to teach
mathematics. Technologies will include graphing calculators, calculator based
laboratories, computers, and interactive video-discs.
- Participants will increase their knowledge of the issues behind
implementing block scheduling in high school mathematics and will learn
effective ways to use block scheduling in high school mathematics classes.
- Participants will benefit from each other’s insights as their schools go
through the textbook selection process.
- Project staff, with input from participants, will continue development of
the Web site to support efforts of the proposed project and to help
strengthen, expand, and preserve the Area 10 Mathematics and Technology
support network after funding for the project ends. The Web site will be used
to host a database of the instructional units and personal web pages, to
provide access to other resources available on the WWW, and to facilitate
collaboration through electronic communication.
- Participants will improve their skills using technology to communicate
among each other and to access resources available on the WWW.
- Project staff, with input from participants, will generate additional
curriculum units for teaching mathematics through applications. These units
will make maximum use of instructional technology.
- Participants will gain increased ability to act as classroom "facilitators"
rather than "lecturers" and to incorporate other pedagogical aspects of NCTM's
Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics into their instruction.
- Participants will increase their repertoire of assessment instruments and
techniques. In particular, participants will learn to use portfolio and
performance assessment techniques and will learn to use holistic scoring when appropriate.
- Participants will show that, based on appropriate assessment techniques,
their students are mastering skills called for by the Indiana Core 40
Proficiencies, and the NCTM Standards.
