Course Requirements

Attendance: You are expected to attend all lectures and all discussion classes. If you miss more than four sessions, for whatever reason, you may be in danger of failing the course. Habitual tardiness will be counted as an absence.
Reading: Jeremy Popkin, History of Modern France, is the recommended "background" textbook for this course. You may buy any edition, though if you have an older edition you may find that your page numbers do not correspond to the ones I have listed. In addition to the textbook, you are expected to read an average of 50 pages each week to discuss. I have worked very hard to identify readings for discussion that I think you will find interesting and engaging; make sure you allow enough time to read them.
Participation: Participation counts for 20% of your overall grade. The Friday classes are structured as discussions. If you attend the Friday classes but do not engage constructively, then you will only get a "C" (or less) for participation. I recognize that some students may be very nervous about speaking in class and encourage those who are especially anxious about this to speak with me privately in office hours.
Written work: three short (two page) exercises, each worth 5% of your overall grade; take-home midterm (20%); 8-10 page final paper (25%); final exam (25%).
