Chimes of Indiana

Words Only

Sing these chimes of Indiana,
Hail to the crimson hue;
Sing her praise to Gloriana,
Hail to our old I. U.
Lift your voices, join in loyal chorus
Let your heart rejoice in praise of those before us,
Sing these chimes of Indiana,
Ever to her be true!

Songwriter Hoagy Carmichael produced many works that are now considered classics, amongst them Stardust and Georgia. In 1926 he earned a Law degree from I.U, and was presented with an honorary Doctorate in Music in 1972.

In 1937, the class of 1935 presented the University with this gift from the pen of Carmichael. Proposed as an Alma Mater for many years, it was adopted by the Alumni Association as an official Alma Mater alongside Hail to Old I.U. in 1978.
