CRABB BAND Membership Information

The IU Crabb Band is a select athletic band that performs for men's soccer, women's soccer, women's volleyball, and women's basketball games. This paid, professional group is selected by audition. The Crabb Band is important not only to the Department of Bands, but the IU Athletic Department as well. Members are expected to treat their status in the group as a professional commitment.

1. Instrumentation for soccer band is as follows:
  • 3 Horns
  • 5 Trumpets
  • 5 Trombones
  • 1 Baritone
  • 2 Sousaphones
  • 3 percussion
2. Instrumentation for volleyball band is as follows:

  • 2 Trombones

  • 1 Drumset
3. Instrumentation for women's basketball band is as follows:

  • 1 Electric Bass
After selections have been made there will be a short meeting and rehearsal at Hundred Hall

4. As stated above, selection in the group is done by an audition in the Fall. There will be some consideration for previous service, although this can also count against an individual (previous tardies and/or absences). It is understood that conflicts will arise, but if many conflicts are foreseen, please consider not auditioning. (i.e. a part-time job, heavy class load with Hundred, etc.)

5. Payment for soccer band is $20 per event. Payment for women's volleyball is $20 per event. Payment for women's basketball is $20 per event. Call time for soccer band is 1/2 hour prior to start of game. Call time for women's volleyball is one hour prior to first match of evening. Call time for women's basketball is 1/2 hour prior to start of game. Tardies result in a $5 reduction in payment. If a member is to miss a performance, a sub from the Crabb Band sub list MUST be found. Please call subs in the order that they appear on the list. If no substitute can be found, you must contact the director at least 24 hours in advance of the event. There is NO excuse for not finding a sub.

6. Members of the Crabb Band are highly encouraged to audition for the Big Red Basketball Band, although membership in the Crabb Band does not guarantee a place in the BRBB.

7. Members of the Crabb Band should be prepared to travel with the men's soccer and/or women's basketball team to the NCAA Tournaments.

8. Dress for soccer and women's volleyball will be the official IU Crabb Band polo shirt and shorts/jeans (Marching Hundred raincoat for cold-weather games). Dress for women's basketball will be exactly the same as Big Red Basketball Band: black pants, black shoes and socks, white collared shirt with tie, IU BRBB vest.

9. Crabb band members will forfeit regular membership after being absent from two games, and will become the first sub. The position will be replaced by a substitute member from the list.

10. The Crabb Band is a spirited group and is probably the best part-time job anyone could ask for. We are expected to be a support and entertainment unit. No homework or headphones are allowed during games. Please do your part to support IU Athletics as they support the IU Bands!
