Message from The Colonel
Director of Athletic Bands - David C. Woodley
Greetings from IU!
After a very successful (and short) Band Camp, we were pleased to get our first game out of the way on August 30!
The Hoosiers looked good in the opener, but we know there are many great teams waiting for them down the road.
The Marching Hundred is fielding about 265 members this year - almost every section has increased in quality and number from last year.
Our rookie class, one of the biggest ever, has done a remarkable job learning show and stand music, and are quickly adjusting to the "high step" style of marching.
This week brings 18 high school bands to Bloomington for Band Day 2008.
We'll have over 1200 participants from around the state joining us at halftime on the field.
Dr. Paul Popiel, Associate Director of Athletic Bands, and his assistants Pam Holt and Kyle Glaser, have done an incredible job putting this yearly event together.
I hope you can join us on Saturday - kick off is set for 7:00 p.m.
We thank our "Tailgate Gang" for continuing to provide a wonderful feast for the band each week.
These parents spend a great deal of time and money making certain the Hundred is well fed before each home game.
This Sunday, the Hundred will travel to Indianapolis to be the featured halftime entertainment for the first NFL regular season game in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Colts will be taking on the Chicago Bears with kickoff set for 8:15 p.m.
The Hundred will have a shortened show that evening, consisting of "Livin on a Prayer" and "Sing Sing Sing"
We hope you can make one or both of our events this weekend!!
Dave Woodley Interview in Halftime Magazine
Halftime Magazine interviewed our director, Dave Woodley about his experience as a college marching band director and other perspectives about band.
Quote from the Article:
"Halftime: What do you love most about your job?"
"Woodley: The best part is that it's fun to work with college-aged students. Since the Big Ten tradition of band is strong, many of my students have grown up wanting to march and are full of energy. They all have different backgrounds and majors, but they can all come together for one thing."
