Message from The Colonel
Director of Athletic Bands - David C. Woodley
Dear Hundred Fan,
With two big victories, the Hoosiers enter the Southern Illinois game at 2-0! The band
has played an integral part at both games, including last Saturday's victory at Ball State.
Despite a bus problem and the rain at the end of the game, the 30-member band celebrated
"Indiana, Our Indiana" with the Hoosiers for the 2nd week in a row.
This week, we hold the 14th annual Band Day at Memorial Stadium. 18 high school bands will
join us at halftime as we perform to both the East and West sides of Memorial Stadium.

The Marching Hundred is proud to welcome Dr. Paul W. Popiel to the staff as the Associate Director of the
Hundred and Assistant Director of Bands at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
Dr. Popiel conducts the Concert Band and teaches courses in conducting and wind history.
Prior to his appointment at IU, Popiel was the Associate Director of Bands and Director of
the Cowboy Marching Band at Oklahoma State University.
"I am really happy to be working with the Marching Hundred and with Dave
Woodley. IU has such a great history of excellent and entertaining
marching bands, and to be part of that history is a quite an honor for
me. Mr. Woodley is one of the very best college marching band directors
in the country, and serving as his assistant is a lot of fun."
Dr. Popiel taught in the public schools of Texas and Michigan and holds degrees from Truman
State University, the University of Notre Dame, and Michigan State University. As a 1996
Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar, he earned a Postgraduate Diploma in 20th-Century
Music at the University of Bristol, England. He recently served as Resident Conductor of
the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Wind Ensemble as the Frank L. Battisti
Conducting Fellow.
"I have worked with a lot of other major conference marching bands,
including Notre Dame, Michigan State, and Oklahoma State. No one else
in the country combines traditional precision marching and high energy
fun the way the Marching Hundred does. This band truly is ready for
Pasadena!"
Dr. Popiel maintains an active schedule as a drill designer, clinician, adjudicator, and
guest conductor. He holds memberships in College Band Directors National Association, Music
Educators National Conference, Collegiate Music Society, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Tau Beta Sigma.
