BCEC Enjoys Success
Student-formed club provides networking opportunities in sports, entertainment

Three years ago, on a typical rainy Indiana February evening, a sophomore at Indiana University by the name of Edward Joel Anderson was on his way home from a hard day at the Kelley Business School. While walking, he noticed something stuck to his shoe, which ended being a wet copy of the Tenth Street Times. Just days later, the Business Careers in Entertainment Club (BCEC) was formed.

Now, the BCEC has much to boast about. Though Anderson has now graduated and works with Cleveland Media Connect, the club has been left in the hands of senior Robert Rosenthal. The mission statement of this club, "to provide internships, job opportunities, career information, and hands-on experience to undergraduate students interested in the business end of the entertainment industry," has become a resource for students in more ways than one. According to Jonathan Levey, current executive vice president of the club, the BCEC works with companies such as IMG (a sports marketing firm), MTV Networks, NBC, SIRIUS Satellite radio, Atlantic Records, Columbia Records, the New York City Sports Commission, and Time Inc. Furthermore, the club makes an annual trip to New York City to meet with these various companies, providing valuable networking opportunities for its members.

The club is split up into eight committees: Sports, Music, Radio, Television, Film, Publishing, Theater, and Gaming. Upon joining, members are required to join a certain group according to their interests. Currently, the Sports and Music groups are the most popular and active. To illustrate, the Sports group, currently under the leadership of Levey, is working with the Indiana Pacers to sell tickets at a discounted price for the March 25th game, which is called "IU Night". Whoever sells the most tickets in this group is automatically guaranteed an interview with the Pacers. All others will get an exclusive tour of the headquarters as well as a networking conference with the executives of the Pacers.

The music group, on the other hand, is organizing a concert called "Friday Night Rock". The doors open on April 22nd at 7:30pm at Rhino’s in Bloomington, and the show starts at 8pm featuring bands: Percival Potts, Muzaic, and Trio in Stereo. Levey said that he intends to implement a format for all groups next year when he assumes the position of President which will include two meetings a month, an increase of hands-on experience and more networking.

There are currently 150 paying members in the group with over 400 people on their mailing list. According to Levey, "the group is quite even with underclassmen and upperclassmen." To become a member, you must attend a call out meeting at the beginning of either the fall or spring semester and pay a $20 membership fee for the year. Levey said that the fee covers various guest speakers such as Steve Bellamy, President of the Tennis Channel, a new 24-hour cable network devoted to the sport. Levey emphasized that BCEC tries to get as many guest speakers as possible in order to broaden the scope of learning their members receive.
