** NEWS: We have extended our deadlines to the following:
International applicants - Priority deadline is December 1st with full consideration if complete application is received by our office by December 20th.
Domestic applicants - The deadline has been extended to January 15th.
We accept students with a broad range of backgrounds in biochemistry, chemistry, or biology. It is helpful if you have had a strong science background that includes biochemistry, organic chemistry, and molecular biology. Please note that there are different requirements for domestic and permanent resident applicants than there are for international applicants.
Domestic and permanent resident applicants:
Applicants for admission should take the general GRE exam. The biochemistry GRE subject exam is recommended, but not required.
All required admission and financial aid documents (such as letters of recommendation) for domestic students and permanent residents should be sent directly to the Biochemistry Program Graduate Office by January 15th.
Complete domestic and permanent resident applications for graduate study should contain the following:
- Application form (if not using the online application system).
- A 300-500 word Statement of Purpose regarding your current goals, plans for your professional career, and reasons for selecting a field of study (if not already submitted through the online application system)
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended.
- Official results of the Graduate Record Examinations (Quantitative, Verbal, and Analytical) and results of the biochemistry subject GRE test if taken. These should be mailed directly from the listed address from the Educational Testing Service. Please note that the process of scoring those exams and mailing out results frequently takes several weeks.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- A list stating your teaching, research and/or industrial experiences; a publications list, if available; and any college or professional honors and awards. You may also include a resume that includes this information.
- An application fee of $50 USD. The University Graduate School participates in several programs designed to expand participation of underrepresented minority groups in graduate education. Prospective student applicants who apply through one of four programs can receive an application fee waiver from the University Graduate School. The programs are (1) Project 1000 ; (2) McNair Graduate Fellowship Program ; (3) Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC) FreeApp Program (waiver application ); and, (4) National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) .
All applicants that are accepted into the program should respond no later than April 15th to the offer of admittance. After the deadline, promise of support can no longer be guaranteed.
International applicants:
The priority application deadline for international students is December 1st with full consideration if the complete application is received by our office by December 20th. Please follow the instructions for applicants found on the Apply Now page.
IMPORTANT: All required admission and financial aid documents should be sent directly to
the Interdisciplinary Biochemistry Program Office at Simon Hall 003, 212 S. Hawthorne Drive, Bloomington, IN 47405. Once our office receives your application, we will forward it to the Office of International Admissions.
Due to the extremely high volume of mail that is received in that office during the application season, sending it directly to the Office of International Admissions can possibly impede the process of your application considerably.
Applicants for admission should take the general GRE exam. The biochemistry GRE subject exam is recommended, but not required. If you are from a country in which English is not the primary language, you should also take the TOEFL exam and the Test of English as a Written Language.
