Do you offer application fee waivers?
All requests for application fee waivers will be denied. Processing the thousands of applications that come to the university at large, to all of its departments, is an expensive process. Contact the Office of International Admissions if you have any questions.

Will I be required to interview with a faculty member?
Interviews are a required part of the admissions procedures. Those selected to sit for an interview are invited to meet with one of our faculty members early in the year - usually in January or February. These are conducted either by videoconference, phone, or in person.

Can I be directly admitted into a faculty member's lab?
No applicant is directly admitted into a lab. Admission decisions are made by a committee. It is therefore not possible for an individual faculty member to accept an applicant into his or her lab directly. New students do not actually enter a lab until after their first year - they must participate in a series of rotations through three labs before they select a lab to do their research.

What type of financial support will I receive?
All Ph.D. students that are admitted are supported by the department for at least the first year of their graduate studies. In remaining years, students are supported either as a Research Assistant or as an Associate Instructor (AI). To be supported as an AI, international students whose native language is not English must first pass the Test of English for Associate Instructors examination (an examination that is required and administered by Indiana University). Applicants must be thoroughly adept at both understanding and speaking English in order to pass this examination.

How many students are admitted into the program?
We have no way of predicting how many students will be admitted from year to year. These decisions are entirely dependent on the availability of funding each year.

If I applied last year and was not accepted, can I apply again?
If you are reapplying to our graduate program and you have already paid the application fee you do not need to pay it again. You do, however, need to complete a new application. You need to request this from the Office of International Admissions.
When you reapply, be sure to include a cover letter along with your application indicating that you are reapplying and that you would like to have your application materials resubmitted to the Interdisciplinary Biochemistry Department. You should add new transcripts, scores, etc. if appropriate and a new statement of purpose along with your application. Feel free to add any additional materials if you feel they would enhance your chances of being accepted.

Do you offer any spring semester admissions?
We do not accept applications for the Ph.D. or M.S. for the spring semester, due primarily to the limited availability of funds and to the nature of the required course curriculum.

Are there minimum test scores in order to be considered for admission?
GRE: We do not have a minimum GRE score for admission. We can only say that our average score for international students around 1350 (verbal + quantitative) with an advanced (subject) score of 600 or above. The advanced (subject) test is not required but highly recommended.
TOEFL: The minimum TOEFL score is 79-80 for internet-based tests (213 for computer-based tests and 550 for paper-based tests) but the average admission score is around 100 for internet-based tests (250 for computer-based tests and 600-603 for paper-based tests).
This is not to say that those with lower scores are not admitted. However, those with higher scores are at an obvious advantage.

I'm concerned that my official test scores will not reach you by the deadline. What should I do?
You do not need to list your scores on the application form, although it would be helpful. We are now able to receive your official GRE scores electronically 14 days after you take the exam.
If you have a paper copy of your test scores, you may provide photocopies of your exam scores for review purposes by faxing, emailing, or mailing a copy of your test results. Even if you have provided a copy of your results, we will still need your official results reported directly from ETS.
