Alile Sharon Larkin Collection


Biographical NoteAlile Sharon Larkin

Alile Sharon Larkin was born May 6, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from the University of Southern California in which she focused on creative writing and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles with a focus in film and television production. Her fellow classmates included future filmmakers Barbara McCullough and Carroll Blue.

Larkin's first film was Your Children Come Back To You in 1979. In 1982, Larkin won accolades for her film A Different Image, which won first prize from the Black American Cinema Society. Larkin is a co-founder of the Black Filmmakers Collective, a collection of independent filmmakers. As part of this organization, Larkin helped to produce the 1984 cable program My Dream is to Marry an African Prince. Larkin produced the television documentaries What Color is God? (1986) and Miss Fluci Moses (1987). In 1989, Sharon Larkin formed NAP Productions with the purpose of producing quality educational video and television for children with works such as Dreadlocks and the Three Bears (1992).

Scope and Content Note

The Sharon Larkin Collection currently consists of two films. Both of these films are represented in 16mm format. For simplicity, these films have been grouped into a series devoted to Larkin's 16mm films. From there, the collection has been subdivided by the individual titles. Within each subseries is a listing of the canister numbers corresponding to the specific reels of film that comprise each film.
