City Lights Film Screenings

The Black Film Center/Archive is sponsoring two City Lights film screenings in the spring of 2003. City Lights holds free 16mm screenings of classic films on Friday nights at 7:00pm in Ballantine Hall 013.

The Blood of Jesus (1941)

A religious folk-drama, this film was written, directed, and starred in by Spencer Williams. It concerns the accidental shooting of Martha (Cathryn Caviness) by her husband and of the faith in Jesus that brings her back. As she lies dying, her soul goes on a symbolic journey in which it rejects Hell for Zion, Satan for God, at the foot of the cross. When she awakens, recovered, the choir of sisters and brothers from the church come in to sing and celebrate the miracle.

The Blood of Jesus will be shown on Friday, March 28, 2003, at 7:00 PM.

Josephine BakerZou Zou (1934)

Josephine Baker stars in this 1934 French musical as a laundress who seizes her chance for success when the star of the show abruptly leaves with her lover. A love triangle and a wrongful imprisonment also color this film that showcases Baker's singing and dancing talent. In French with English subtitles.

Zou Zou will be shown on Friday, February 14, 2003, at 7:00 PM.
