Workshop on Documentary Filmmaking

Salem Mekuria, an independent filmmaker and associate professor at Wellesley College will conduct a workshop for students interested in Documentary Filmmaking. Her visit is under the auspices of the Black Film Center/Archive, the African Studies Program, and the Project on African Expressive Traditions.
In each of her films Mekuria attends to the large political backdrop of our times and reaches into individual lives to reveal how our identities make and are made by social and political realities. Her films are powerful documents for those interested in the lives of Africans and the lives of women in contemporary times.

Description: A workshop/seminar on documentary storytelling. We will review the basic concepts and processes of documentary storytelling, examine different styles of storytelling in documentaries, explore various story ideas and create two detailed outlines for documentaries.
Class Size is limited. Priority sign up begins Dec 1.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled IU student
- Strong interest in documentary filmmaking (one page description of interest and background)
- An outline or synopsis of a "visual story idea"
- Able to attend screening of Ms. Mekuria' film (March 24 @ 4pm and March 26 @5pm)
