Drs. Howard and Joel Sagalowsky met with biology Chair Roger Innes and Associate Chair Clay Fuqua on May 16 to see the recently renovated Jordan Hall laboratories. They also toured Simon Hall, the multidisciplinary science building built in 2007. “When IU builds something, they do it right,” Howard commented.

Howard earned two degrees from IU, a BA in 1965, and an MD in 1969. He has worked as an anesthesiologist in the Indianapolis area and is now semi-retired. Joel also earned degrees from IU, a BA in 1972 and a DDS in 1975. He has a dental practice in the Broad Ripple area of Indianapolis.

During their visit, the brothers spoke fondly of classes with biology faculty including John Preer, Frank Zeller, and the late Tracy Sonneborn. In appreciation of the impact that IU’s biological sciences had on his career, Howard established the Sagalowsky Family Endowed Professorship in Biology via an estate gift. The bequest is made in memory of his parents, Edna and Benjamin, and honors his brother, Joel, as well.

“The biology department is extremely appreciative of this generous gift from the Sagalowsky family,” said Roger Innes. “It is gifts such as these that enable the department to excel in teaching and research and maintain its position as one of the top biology departments in the Big 10. These funds will be used specifically to endow the Sagalowsky Family Professorship. Such professorships provide unrestricted funds for faculty to pursue high risk high payoff research projects, and are an invaluable tool for recruiting and retaining top faculty.”
