In the spring of 2016, recipient Matthew Helm will visit the Blatchley Nature Study Club. While there, he will give a presentation featuring the results of his research on conferring disease resistance to the viral pathogen Soybean Mosaic Virus in soybeans. Matt is a member of Roger Innes lab, where research suggests that endogenous soybean resistance genes (R genes) can be modified to confer durable resistance to the Soybean Mosaic Virus. The aim of this work is to generate crop plants with wide-spectrum, agronomically useful disease resistance.
