Emma Winkler graduated in May with a B.S. in Biochemistry, a B.A. in Microbiology, and a minor in Spanish. She conducted independent research in Professor Cheng Kao’s lab in the Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Department. Her research project examined the replication of the human norovirus.

Emma accrued many academic honors during her undergraduate career. She was named a Herman B Wells Scholar in 2011 and was one of 288 students selected nationwide to earn a 2014 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Emma is also the recipient of one of Indiana University’s 2015 Senior Recognition Awards, the Herman B Wells Distinguished Senior Award that annually recognizes one senior who excelled academically and demonstrated leadership skills. In the fall, Emma will attend the Medical Scientist Training Program, a combined M.D. / Ph.D. program at Washington University in St. Louis. She wants to research microbial pathogens that cause human disease, especially viruses, and work to apply her findings in the development of new drugs and more efficient treatments.
