Research Description

George's research interest involved the exploitation of the Chlamydomonas genetics system to explore basic questions of cell biology.  In collaboration with Carol bart, he showed that accumulation of toxic products in a batch culture of the y-2 mutant causes cell death, and that chlorophyll synthesis is not obligatory for cell growth.  (excerpted from 2001 retirement tribute)
