Research Description

Using his expertise with the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas, Bob undertook genetics experiments that explored several aspects of carbon dioxide incorporation in photosynthesis, seeking mutants that would provide information about basic photosynthetic pathways.  His most notable success in the develoment of new lab tools was the BioNebulizer, which was selected as on of 100 Discoveries of the Year by Research and Development Magazine in 1993—this patented machine breaks apart intact cells of algae, bacteria, and yeast, and has proven particularly useful for isolating intact chloroplasts from Chlamydomonas.
