Microbiology Graduate Program
We welcome your interest in the Microbiology Graduate Program at Indiana University. This is an exciting time for microbiologists and the field of microbiology, as recent years have produced a revolution in microbial biology.
Microorganisms offer the best source of new knowledge about basic mechanisms of cellular function, application of genomic information, and understanding of environmental processes. Unlocking the secrets of microorganisms will prove vital in a world where infectious diseases still take the lives of more than 50,000 people a day, and emerging antibiotic resistance and hyper-virulent strains threaten to return us to the pre-antibiotic era. Despite the undeniable importance of microbes, we know strikingly little about them.
Indiana University offers an exciting interdisciplinary graduate program that provides training in the microbiology of prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and viruses. In addition, students in our program learn how to critically analyze and plan scientific research, present seminars, write high-quality research papers, and obtain grant funding. Our graduate program provides students with the training and research experience necessary to pursue a wide range of careers in academic biomedical research, the biotech industry, government science, and university-level teaching. I encourage you to take a close look at what we have to offer.
