Introgression (left) and Incomplete Lineage Sorting (right) are common causes of phylogenetic discordance, where the evolution history of a particular locus differs from the species phylogeny.

Regions of the genome with lower effective population size exhibit lower levels of incomplete lineage sorting

Regions of the genome with lower effective population size (such as the X chromosome) exhibit lower levels of incomplete lineage sorting, and thus more often indicate the species phylogeny.

Research Description

The study of phylogenetic and molecular evolution data on the whole-genome scale allows the detection and interpretation of a whole new range of evolutionary patterns previously undetectable by gene-by-gene phylogenetic methods.  My research involves testing for introgression, recombination, and phylogenetic discordance among closely-related genomes from both plant (Solanaceae) and animal (Anopheles, Drosophila) systems.
