The Center on Aging and Aged is involved in curriculum assessment through the FIPSE funded project GET LINKS as well as through a Technology Assessment Grant funded by the IU Office of the Vice President for Information. The GET LINKS curriculum follows the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education's standards for the Certificate and minor in Gerontology, as well as practice standards, college course work expectations, and the needs identified at the GET LINKS Learning Communities. The curriculum is designed for the already-employed learner, using problems and cases from the field. The curriculum is assessed by expert review of all modules, courses, standards, and pedagogy. GET LINKS faculty are compiling faculty portfolios for an on-line teaching resource book. Learning outcomes are evaluated via Learning Portfolios, as well as pre and post testing of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The Technology Assessment Grant, "The Effectiveness of Online Educational Technologies in Gerontology Education," is studying the effectiveness of educational technology in web-based gerontology classes for non-traditional and traditional students. Data on various online educational technologies from gerontology classes at IU are being collected and analyzed. Technologies being studied include web conferencing, bulletin boards, journaling, web-quests, expert chat, synchronous chat, gaming, split screen narrated power point presentations, CD-ROMS with video files, video streaming, Polycom interactive video, and virtual reality simulations. The study uses a four-tiered evaluation design, which involves assessing student satisfaction, student learning/performance, transferability of knowledge to the field, and academic/professional impact with each educational module. The project also addresses the effectiveness of educational technologies with non-traditional students primarily interested in professional development, in contrast to the traditional student.
