Graduate Conference Travel Awards

The College Arts and Humanities Institute announces a competition (two times per year) for graduate students to support costs related to travel to professional conferences at which the student is presenting a paper.

Eligibility: Any Ph.D. or MFA student in the arts and humanities (in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University) may apply.

Students must be enrolled at IU in order to apply for and receive award funding.

Requirements and Criteria

Applications must consist of:

  • 1-page cover letter outlining the significance of the conference in relation to the student’s work
  • curriculum vitae
  • brief abstract of the paper to be given (no more than 200 words)
  • documentation that the student has had a paper accepted for the conference
  • letter of support from a faculty advisor or the departmental DGS outlining the student’s progress toward the degree and the significance of the conference in relation to the student’s work
  • documentation that there are no outstanding charges (zero balance) on student’s bursar account

Awards may be up to $1000.

Recipients must wait an academic year before reapplying.

2017-18 Deadlines:

  • September 15, 2017 (for travel after October 15, 2017)
  • February 9, 2018 (for travel after March 15, 2018)

NB: If other internal or external funding is received for the same project, CAHI requires notification, and reserves the right to adjust or reassign awards in light of this information. Awards cannot be given retroactively for conferences already attended before the date of award notification. Funding will come in the form of a fellowship that will be processed through SIS and credited to the recipient’s bursar account.

Dissertation or MFA Thesis Research Travel Awards

The College Arts and Humanities Institute announces a competition (two times per year) for travel costs related to travel for the purposes of research (visits to archives, fieldwork, etc.).

Eligibility: Any Ph.D. student in the arts and humanities (in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University) who has completed all course work, been advanced to candidacy, and who is at work on the dissertation. MFA students must be within one year of completing their thesis work.

Students must be enrolled at IU in order to apply for and receive award funding.

Requirements and Criteria

Applications must consist of:

  • 1-page cover letter outlining the research to be done and the necessity of the travel
  • curriculum vitae
  • brief abstract of the dissertation or thesis project (no more than 200 words)
  • budget outlining expected costs
  • letter of support from a faculty advisor, outlining the student’s progress toward the degree and the significance of the research trip in relation to the student’s work
  • documentation that there are no outstanding charges (zero balance) on student’s bursar account
