Drawing and the Brain Symposium

“Drawing and the Brain,” a symposium gathering artists, architects, and scientists convenes to discuss the primacy of the sketch as the creative tool of invention and discovery in architecture. The symposium will take place April 7-10 at the Indiana University Center for Art+Design, located at 310 Jackson St., Columbus, IN.

Today, the sketch remains an integral part of artistic inquiry, but has been all but supplanted in architecture by digital media. Though plans, sections and elevations are produced by the computer, the sketch is a tool of invention and discovery that requires the tactile involvement of the human hand and its direct relationship to the brain.

The symposium addresses questions of authorship and mark-making; drawing and the human voice; the relationship between hand and brain; and the potential for creation of “digital/tactile machines” able to emulate touch and mark-making. Empirical discourse from the artist and architect supported by data from scientists and engineers seeks to redefine the role of drawing as a primary expression of creativity in architecture without ignoring technology.

Forbus, Gabriela Goldschmidt, Dr. Robert Goldstone, William Gwin, AIA, Frank Harmon, FAIA, Patricia Heyda, Dr. Karin James, Dr. David Kirsh, Carl Lostritto, Thomas Lyon Mills, Marleen Newman, AIA, Sharlene Newman, Dr. Ju Hong Park, Jennifer Riley, Dr. Barbara Tversky, Caleb Weintraub, Dr. Frank Wilson, M.D., T. Kelly Wilson.

The chosen participants, through their scholarship, creative activity, and products of invention, link drawing and the brain across the disciplines of art, architecture, design, education, computer science, engineering, neuroscience, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and product design. As a group, their expertise is broadly interdisciplinary; their individual work points to the importance of the fundamental relationship between “the drawing hand and the creative brain” in the process of invention. Drawing and the Brain is a forum for discussion of ideation and invention across disciplines and points to the importance of the physical act of drawing.

The symposium commences with a reception for the coinciding exhibition, “Drawing Upon Drawing,” curated by Jennifer Riley. The exhibition features eight acclaimed practitioners of drawing who approach problems of representation, imagination, modeling, rendering and expression in remarkable and diverse ways. The artists have been selected to support specific concerns to be addressed in the conference.

Riley will give a gallery talk drawing upon the histories of these approaches; it will offer interpretation and illumination of these specific examples of handmade drawing to further the understanding of how they may relate to current research on the brain and drawing. The exhibition continues through May 27.
