Flower and Sword by Ma Sen is the story of a child returning home after 20 years abroad to visit their father’s grave. A ghostly masked figure waits for them here, revealing dark secrets about a deadly love triangle in the past and its implications for the child’s future. With only two characters that can be played by male or female actors and a focus on symbolism and sexuality, Flower and Sword stands out as an excellent contribution to theatrical modernity from the Sinophone world.
