“Hobos, Saints, Superstars: Roman Catholic Preachers in early modern France ”
Anne Régent-Susini from the University Sorbonne nouvelle – Paris 3 will talk about early modern preachers in Feance.
September 25, 2013
Hoagy Carmichael Room, Morrison Hall 006
Preachers could be like superstars in early modern France. During this “golden age” of preaching, the extraordinary popularity of missionaries and court preachers inspired questions about the social and symbolic status of the preacher, his “multimodal” rhetoric, and his paradoxical authority. In her talk Susini will explore these issues as well as the diversity of early modern preaching practices, which often broke new grounds for public speaking and religious communication.
During her visit to IU, Prof. Régent-Susini will also be presenting at a conference, ‘Assembling the Global: Universal History, Past and Present,’ cosponsored by the Department of Religious Studies. See the departmental website for additional information: http://www.indiana.edu/~relstud/.
