“Interdisciplinary Collaboration Across (and Beyond) the Humanities: What Have We Learned?”

A working session with Dorothy Noyes and Eugene M. Tobin.

For the past decade or so, there has been a strong push from funding agencies, professional societies, and home institutions to increase the level of collaborative work in the humanities and to reach across disciplinary divides. Many of these experiments and projects are underway or completed. In this working session with Dorothy Noyes and Gene Tobin, we will ask what have been the successes and the obstacles encountered, and what the future holds for this kind of work.

Dorothy Noyes, Professor of English and Comparative Studies at Ohio State University and a folk- lorist by training, has recently co-authored Sustaining Interdisciplinary Collaboration: A Guide for the Academy (University of Illinois Press, 2017), a detailed survey of the pleasures and challenges of such work. She is a Research Associate at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, served as Director of the Center for Folklore Studies from 2005 to 2014, and was as a Fellow of the Göttingen Interdisciplinary Working Group on Cultural Property for six years. She was elected Fellow of the American Folklore Society in 2005 and will serve as President from 2018-19.

Eugene M. Tobin is Senior Program Officer at the Mellon Foundation in the program for Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities, where his areas of responsibility include grants to liberal arts colleges, research universities, humanities centers and institutes, and the development of cross-institutional collaboration and consortia. He is the co-author of Equity and Excellence in American Higher Education (University of Virginia Press, 2005), winner of the 2006 American Education Research Association’s Outstanding Book Award, and co-author of Locus of Authority: The Evolution of Faculty Roles in the Governance of Higher Education (Princeton University Press, 2015).
