Robert Hass
Monday, April 7, 2008 5:00 pm in the Solarium Indiana Memorial Union
Robert Hass is an award-winning poet whose dedication to knowing and protecting the environment is interwoven with a lifetime of eloquent writing. He is founder of River of Words, an organization that promotes environmental and arts education in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the Book. As US Poet Laureate in 1995-97 he travelled the country to speak and hold workshops with the aim of increasing literacy and spreading the message that “imagination makes community.”
Among the many works of Robert Hass are Time and Materials (Ecco Press, 2007), which won the 2007 National Book Award; Sun Under Wood: New Poems (1996); Human Wishes (1989); Praise (1979); and Field Guide (1973), which was selected by Stanley Kunitz for the Yale Younger Poets Series. Hass has also co-translated several volumes of poetry with Nobel prize winner Czeslaw Milosz, including Facing the River (1995), and is author or editor of several other collections of essays and translation, including The Essential Haiku: Versions of Basho, Buson, and Issa (1994) and Twentieth Century Pleasures: Prose on Poetry (1984).
Hass was named a MacArthur Genius Fellow in 1984. He currently serves as Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and Professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley.
