Andrea Ciccarelli has a Doctoral degree in Humanities from the University of Rome and a PhD in Italian studies at Columbia University. He is a professor in the French and Italian department, and his major field of study is nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian culture, with a special emphasis on Romanticism, Modernism, and the classical tradition in modern Italian culture. He has worked extensively on thematic aspects related to literature and visual art, with --for the modern period-- a particular attention to the ideological, cultural and juridical effects of the French revolution on Italian culture. More recently, he has published on topics such as borders, exile and migrations in contemporary European culture. He is the editor of Italica, the quarterly journal of the American Association of Teachers of Italian, founded in 1923.
