Toddler Studies

CANlab Introduces NON-fMRI Toddler Studies

With funding support from the National Institutes of Health, the CANlab has recently begun groundbreaking new research on child development of perception and how it is influenced by motor experience.

However, we cannot complete this research without the help of parents like you! We are currently recruiting for children aged 18-24 months.

If you have a child in this age range and would like to participate, please call (812-856-7237) or email our lab (canlab1@indiana.edu). See our FAQ section below for more info.

FAQ

What kind of time commitment is necessary?

Our toddler studies are very short in duration, usually no longer than 30 minutes.

What do the studies involve?

After giving your consent to participate, you will fill out a short vocabulary checklist - this is simply to group your child’s data with those at a similar developmental stage. Then, we will have your child wear a small, unobtrusive camera that is attached to a headband. While wearing the camera your child will play with a variety of “toy-like” objects. After playing with the objects the camera is removed and your child will sit on your lap and watch a very short (< 5 min) movie. The movie will also be of “toy-like” objects.

What if my child does not want to wear the head camera?

That is okay! Very useful information can be obtained even if your child does not wear the head camera. Even if your child only completes small portions of the study, it is still very helpful to us and can give us valuable insights into child development.

Is there any compensation for participating?

As a token of our appreciation for participating in our studies we provide your child with a small age appropriate gift, such as a book, toy truck, or stuffed animal. Your child will receive the gift, regardless of whether or not he/she completes the study.
