C.A.P.I. Public Outreach

One of the Center's objectives is to teach people about the practice of archaeology and its importance in the modern world. We also strive to promote understanding and respect of different cultures, both in the past and in the present.  To achieve these objectives, CAPI members participate in a variety of public outreach activities. Click on any of the links below to learn more about specific public outreach recently undertaken by CAPI members.

Hovey Lake Public Archaeology: Exhibits, Open Houses, Lectures and More for Indiana Archaeology Month (2004-2006)!

For the last three years, C.A.P.I. members Alicia Ebbitt and Dru McGill have helped Cheryl Munson (Indiana University) with Indiana Archaeology Month activities at the Caborn-Welborn site of Hovey Lake.  For more information about Cheryl’s great public archaeology research, visit her Website. This link will bring you to three years worth of public outreach activities in and around Posey County, Indiana.

Discovering Archaeology Day, April 2006

The Mathers Museum of World Cultures has sponsored Discovering Archaeology Day for several years. Each year, members of the IU community come together to create educational activities to teach the public about archaeology.  This year, CAPI members Mary Camozzi, Jenny Riley, Emma Bate, Alicia Ebbitt, and Dru McGill worked together to create a three-part station titled "Think like an archaeologist."  Members of the public were invited to learn about context and association in an archaeological mapping activity, test their interpretative skills in an artifact matching game, and learn about typologies, reconstruction, and conservation by working with ceramics.

6th Grade Visit from University Elementary School

CAPI Public Outreach comes to the Annex! Normally our activities are outside of our academic offices, but this time we invited 6th grade students from University Elementary to visit us at the Archaeology Annex.  These young archaeologists-in-training learned how to sort and analyze ceramics, how to map an archaeological site, and how to analyze artifacts by comparing them to modern equivalents.  We had a lot of fun with these students and hope they return.  If you are a teacher interested in scheduling a fieldtrip, please contact Dru McGill.  We are also working on curricular materials involving archaeology so visit again soon!
