Job & Graduate School Search

The Career Development Center offers a plethora of resources for your student to utilize as they embark on their search for jobs, internships, or graduate school.  The Center has several online resources for your students to utilize. These resources and opportunities have been either developed or purchased for the purpose of helping your student find the career or graduate school that best fits them. Online resources include:

  • myIUcareers: A database of full-time, part-time, seasonal, work-study, and internship positions filtered and maintained by the Career Development Center. myIUcareers lists positions from local, national, and international organizations. It's also the first place to check for fairs, interviews, and other career-related events on campus. As a faculty or staff member, you can access myIUcareers with your IU username and passphrase. We encourage you to log in and take a look!
  • Additional Subscription Sites: A selection of subscription databases accessible to IU students, staff, and faculty. These databases include job and internship listings, H-1B visa sponsors, information about nonprofits, and specialized information for arts, entertainment, sports, and environmental careers.
  • Web link library: A compilation of links to help your students research career fields, professional associations, internships, and job openings. The links are categorized by specific career interest, national and international geographic region, and we've included lists of meta-sites and summer jobs.
  • Local Community Service Employers (work-study positions): In addition to using myIUcareers to locate vacancies, students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study might also contact these local organizations that also offer part-time Work-Study employment.
  • Career fairs: In addition to the online and print resources that students can utilize, we also provide applied opportunities for students to network through career fairs and other career events.
  • ASCS Q299: Marketing Yourself for the Job and Internship Search: Q299 is designed to provide students with the tools necessary to help them in their job or internship search. Students who take Q299 will gain knowledge and experience in all the elements (Resume and cover letter writing, networking, job search strategies, and interviewing, etc.) that are needed to prepare them for the job search. Two departments that currently require this course for their students are Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design, and International Studies.
  • Graduate School Search: Attending graduate school and obtaining an advanced degree can be an immensely rewarding experience. The Career Development Center provides students with valuable online information to assist students in the graduate school search. These include resources for researching grad school, applying to grad school, and looking for funding. We also conduct a series called Getting Into Graduate School. During this two-part series, guest speakers (many of whom are faculty) discuss the following topics:
    • Is graduate or professional school right for me?
    • Should I get work experience in the "real world" first?
    • How do I find and research grad schools and programs?
    • What is life like for a grad student?
    • The cost of attending graduate school
    • Financial options (loans, grants, assistantships, etc.)
    • The graduate school application process
    • Personal statements, resumes, and letters of recommendation
    • Preparing for entrance or admission exams (GRE, LSAT, MCAT, etc.)
    • Preparing for grad school interviews
